Just throwing this out there to see if anyone would be interested: A tour of a few of the lesser/unknown "secret" places at Salton Sea. This would be an easy ride that any most any 4x4 could do with sand (dunes) and deep/thick mud in some places..
We would go to a few of the spots at Salton Sea that most people have no idea exist:
  • The "New" Mudpot fields
  • Mullet Island which is now reachable by 4x4
  • The abandoned Navy base, pier, and ammo bunkers

Here is a video of the "unknown" or "New" mud-pot field - one of, if not THE largest and most active mudpot field in California that virtually nobody even knows is there (Link to Youtube video): http://youtu.be/Bj3icM-6xpI?t=56s
(no, these are NOT the mudpots located on the road that most people know about)

Below are some photos of the "island", the Navy Base Pier, one of the buildings and one of the ammo bunkers.

Again, just gauging interest. If taking the trip down to see these sights is something you would be interested in just post a comment. if enough people are interested I'll set up a run and be your personal tour guide :bop:

Bread: Check out the website and click on "reports and blog posts" - those posts, videos and photos are probably one of the biggest collections of "stuff and info" about Salton Sea on all of the interwebs (I hope my site came up in your searches!)

Unsti: not sure.. depends on how many are interested.. I'll be doing my historic (never before done by any human because nobody is that stupid) walk around the entire salton sea in June, and will be busy training/mapping/planning for a month or so before that.. and July through October is probably too warm for most people, so probably sometime in the next 2 months..
