Welding up front differential?

I am thinking of having my front differential done. I wanted to see if anyone has had it done and find out were. I have read about people having it done but it not driving well on the road. I don't drive much on the road but when I do don't want to break anything else. I don't need any help in thar area . Then I thought that with the manual front locks so long as they are not locked it sould not make a difference. I hope someone can help me on this cause I am not seeing any problems with it on the road with the manual hub locks disengaged. Is there something that I am missing?
FYI its an 1981 CJ7 with Dana 30
Thank you

Hi David. Welcome to the forum.
There are guys who have done it and plenty of videos on you tube showing how. The only problem I can think of right off the top of my head is that it makes the spiders very brittle. And it means those spiders are never coming out if you need to fish out a broken axle. It use to be the only way we could lock the diffs. But with the price of an Aussie now days I would go with that and err on the safe and repairable side. Just an opinion..

A big one is the fact you need to turn. Especially full steering lock and a locked diff, don't go well together. If all your doing is mud and sand straight line stuff, sure. Rocks and ,tight trails I wouldnt.

I wouldn't even THINK about welding the front diff. Don't do it, there will be many situations when even offroad you won't be able to steer.

I have f/r air lockers & just 4 weeks ago I was in a nightmare situation where I was close to doing a forward end-over rollover because I couldn't steer the correct direction because I couldn't unlock my front air locker. The trail was rocky and most of the Jeep's weight was on the aired-down front tires, there was too traction & pressure on them for them to be turned left or right. My Jeep was descending down a VERY steep trail & I had to make a hard right turn down the fall-line to avoid that end-over rollover but I couldn't, there was too much pressure on the front locker for it to unlock which turned the front axle into a spool... like having welded spider gears. I was finally able to back up enough so I could take the pressure off the locker to unlock it so I could make the required turn.

Weld up the rear spiders if you want but leave the front spider gears alone.
