Chapman Jeep Purchase

Hello, I'm new to the forum and the proud owner of a 2014 Jeep JK Unlimited. I purchased the jeep from Chapman over on Sahara. I bought one that had already been lifted and already had 35 inch tires. The lift is a 4 inch Pro Comp as far as I can tell.
The problem I'm having is that there is a mild vibration at around 58-60 mph. It feels like a driveline vibration. The lift kit did not include adjustable trac bars or relocation brackets. I can eyeball the tires and see that the axles are not centered.
I feel that the vehicle should drive and perform as well as a non modified vehicle with no vibration or steering shimmy/bump steer. In my opinion the jeeps they are installing the lift kits on are inheriting these vibration and shimmy issues because the lift kits are incomplete and the dealership refuses to install the proper components to make the jeep perform as new. I have already taken it back in to complain about this and they performed an alignment or rather centered the steering wheel and balanced and rotated the tires. This resolved some of the vibration issues as a tire was found to be out of balance.
This is not my first jeep and not the first one I have had that has been lifted so I know a little bit about how it should be set up.

I will say the store manager, Donnie has been trying to work with me to resolve the issue. I just feel that if the dealership intends to sell lifted jeeps that the vehicle should not have any issues and the added modifications should not produce a vehicle that performs in a way that is less than the way a non-modified vehicle performs.

Aside from all that, I love my jeep. I'm looking forward to hitting some trails and exploring the Nevada, Utah and California areas. Also looking forward to meeting up with some of you guys on here and doing some runs.

And honestly I did not look closely under the vehicle until I got it home after the purchase. I assumed it was a quality lift kit that had been done properly and modified with all the required components to allow the vehicle to perform as new. At the time of the test drive the vibration was not fully felt or realized.

So this post should also serve as a warning to others who intend to buy a pre-lifted jeep from Chapman.

There is always the Lemon Law to fall back on...4 attempts at the repair and then it's a new ball game. Thanks for the post, I've been considering buying a Rubicon with some dealer mods done. I am going to reconsider my buying/build options.

When I had bought my 2012 sport with the rocket mountain wheels on it. I think they were close to 33". Anyways this was my first jeep and not knowing the sport came with 3.21 gears, after more research I've found out that that's the minimum gear size for that tire size which entails sluggish performance/ and minimal use of 6th gear. This was true, I don't know how many times I burned the clutch trying to climb stuff and I found this out on the wrangler gear ratio chart. The dealerships just want to give that impression of a bigger better jeep. It's like getting a rice muffle and ground effects on a car, just for looks.

Yea I thought about that too.. Think I will get the Lemon Law booklet out and read through it. I'm taking it back in today or tomorrow and I think I will tell them if it does not drive just like a new unmodified Wrangler JK then I don't want it or else they need to install the additional parts to make it drive like one...

Wilson, you are exactly right...! If it looks good and they get the sale that's all they care about. They want to try and say well the lift kit did not include those extra parts and we can't add them now.... That's crap...! I paid for a brand new vehicle and it should not have vibration or steering shimmy or anything and if it does then they need to fix it....

My buddy a while ago bought a GMC Silverado and put his own lift kit on, it's beastly needles to say. Anyways it was his turn to serve time in Japan, he took his truck back home to Alaska. When he returned back to Cali he wanted to get another Silverado and when he was out looking at the dealership lot, at the lifted trucks, he pointed out to the salesman ALOT of missing components and told him that without these part the truck would not perform well and I can't believe you guys would try to sell this crap to people. The dealership has dumbfounded that someone knew about the kits and stuttered at giving him any logical answer. So he just bought a stock one and drives that around now till his time served is completed. But it's all BS I say. They should fix that for you!

Do you know if they replaced the rear drive shaft with a double cardan/cv drive shaft? Not sure if this required with the JKU, but it might be a possibility to cross off your list if this was done.

I'm unaware of any issues with the drive shaft, however, I will look into it. Today I stopped by a reputable 4x4 shop and spoke with the shop owner about the issues with my jeep. He was kind enough to step outside and spend 15 minutes with me just going over the issues with my jeep and advising me of what may solve the issues.. He of course said that any Jeep lifted over 3" needs to have both front and rear adjustable trac bars and also at least one of the two, lower or upper adjustable control arms. He said that as it is now the pinion and drive shaft are not properly aligned as well as the axels are not centered, the castor is most likely off and the drag link and trac bar geometry is not correct... So I will be informing the dealership of these findings and I will be more demanding about them correcting the issues.. I think at least adjustable trac bars is not asking too much...

I was waiting for a friend at a Ford dealership years (okay, decades) ago when the Mustang convertible came out with a turbocharger (an odd combo, I thought). So I moseyed over to sales to ask about it. They didn't have any in yet.

Took the JK back to the dealership today with my list of problems and requested fixes. The head guy was out to lunch so I left it there with instructions to fix it or keep it... About 2 hours later I get a call from the service manager saying they thought I was supplying the parts to install. I promptly hung up and called the store manager who I have been dealing with and explained that I did not pay for a jeep with off center axels and with driveline vibrations and if he would not fix it that they could keep it and I would swap it out for a unmodded Rubicon. He said he will see what he can do. So hopefully they will install the adjustable track bars and front lower control arms, if so then I will be happy to accept it. If not, then I guess I'm getting a Rubicon, kinda wanted the navigation anyway....

I had to fly to Boston today but when I landed I had a voicemail from the dealership saying they had to order some parts and with any luck it would be ready tomorrow late afternoon. So maybe they decided to make it right. We will see....

UPDATE.....!!!! I spent this evening at the dealership and after they refused to install apx less than $800 dollars worth of parts to make my Jeep right, I demanded that I pick out another one. So I looked around and found a Rubicon with Nav and power windows and locks. Basically loaded except for the leather. I figure I will install my own lift and wheels and tires and it will be an all around better vehicle and a better deal. So anyway even though I liked the Oscar Mike, I'm happy with the Rubicon. Just gotta have them tint the front windows and throw on my rock rails then done deal. And by the way, it drives excellent, no shimmy or shaking and no driveline vibration...

Congrats!! You will not be disappointed with the Rubi. If I would have done a little more research we would be in a Rubi. Now I have to invest in lockers and a better gearing package

Ray does your altitude package come with both as Dana 44?

Congrats man. This is my 2nd Jeep in less than three years, started at sport, went to Sahara and I told the guy I'd be back for a Rubi.

D44 is rear only, just like your Sahara. The Altitude is basically a Sahara Limited Edition Model. There are only a few differences, Red stitching in the interior, black wheels, Altitude Label on the the Hood, that's about it, everything else is the same as a Sahara.

Thanks guys...!! I have not had a chance to get it off-road yet but maybe soon... I am away for work this weekend or else I would have gone to Wheelers. Oh well, guess I will just research info on what lift and wheels and tires I will go with. Enjoy the weekend...

I have a 12 Rubicon and started with a leveling kit and 33" tires. I did some research and went with a Teraflex 3" lift with 8 control arms and adjustable trace bars, also changed to 35" tires. I do have to re-gear because the 12 Rubicon came standard with 3.73 gears. Overall I am happy with my choice on the lift and the customer service at Teraflex has been great.

I agree, I have had a Teraflex lift on one of my previous Jeeps and it was nice. I was thinking maybe Metalcloak for this one but I want to see how well it does stock for now plus I gotta save up some cash. Was thinking AEV wheels and maybe Toyo or GY but not sure yet.

The MetalCloak is a sweet lift, I have the Rock Krawler 3.5 X Factor and love it! It flex's really good. I have the Oscar Mike as well so I will be locking the rear in about a month with new gears to go with it. I have the GY MTR Kevlars and they are holding up well with all the crawling I have been doing but I am switching up to steel wheels and doing either the weld on rim savers or weld on bead locks. Something I can beat on with no worries about cosmetics.
