I need a winch.

I know a lot of you have opinions about a good winch and I would like to hear any pros or cons about the winches you all are using. I bought a cheap one for my "51" Willys and am very disappointed in it, of course. Now I am looking to buy one for my "05" TJ. I prefer not to hear any stories about Smittybilt. I have had personal problems with the company. If you had to put a bigger alternator in your rig I would like to hear why. Thanks for your comments, Mo.

My experience with winches

I have had two so not much experience. I had the Mile marker 9500 electric and the mile marker 12000 electric.

Both worked well but never really needed them much. The 9500 with the solenoid mount broke from vibration. That later caused it to not work. I learned after getting a new one to mount solid on the inner fender in a area that sucked in cool air.

The 12000 worked great never had an issue. I know overkill on the TJ.

I went with electric for ease and hook up and never had to upgrade anything electrical. Also did not want to worry about about hydraulic break down from use of the winch. Electrical is easy to ensure no issues by dual battery and then I can isolate accessories. Maybe I should have had to upgrade alt and other parts, but never did and never had an issue.

I have yet to buy a new winch for the new jeep. Main reason is I am more an over-land explorer and the weight. I also carry a high-lift, so in a pinch I have a winch even if it is manual.

I went cheap since I knew my use was not going to be every outing. More like maybe every 100th or so if that. I also never go out without a partner vehicle.

My feeling is mile marker is not bad. Good luck on your purchase.

Thanks for the info kid. Mile marker is one of the winches I was actually looking at. I did see a Warn 8,000 pound at 4WD parts that is in my budget too. I just worry it would be too light in a tight spot. A bigger winch might help when I really need it. Right now with the elections coming and not knowing the outcome for our future in this USA, I am going to wait until after the elections. Gas prices are going up and getting out for a weekend of wheelin is getting harder and harder. Later.

Something to remember using a pully block will increase pulling capability. So 8000 with one will be fine for almost all situations most of us get into.
