need advise

Has anybody changed a steering column on a 87 wrangler yj, and is it worth doing yourself or should I take it to a mechanic?

Go check out the YJ page there is a hundred threads on all the issues. Yes it's worth it shop labor in this town is around $100/hr and there probably no more qualified on an old YJ than you are. If you have real issues shoot me a PM and we'll talk I am busy with a few things for the next two weeks but hey you never know.

Its really not that hard. You need to push the seat back and recline it as much as possible. then take off the plastic dash covers under the steering column.

go to the engine compartment and loosen the bolt at the top of the "U joint" where the shaft goes into it. douse it in PB Blaster or WD 40 etc, get a long punch, and pound it out of the collar.

Once out of the collar, disconnect the retaining clip on the outer collar (the large one coming from the fire wall).

Go back inside, take apart all electrical connections you need to, loosen the bolts holding the column bracket into the dash frame on the inside, and you should be pretty close to pulling it out.
