Packsaddle Loop Trail AZ

The trail starts at mile marker 50-51 on Hwy 93 south in AZ, left turn and air down. The trail to the top this way is a maintained 2wd road to a campground and lookout at the top of the mountain. Nice views and a great place to stop for lunch. From there you can head to an old mine on the downhill side. The road from the campground back into Chloride is for high clearance 4wd. The going is slow a lot of low range low gear because of the rock and terrain. Narrow but good road with great views and a lot of switchbacks. Take a right to the mine not much turn around area no more than 10 vehicles. The old mine has a very deep hole never heard the rocks hit bottom and the amount of tailings tells the story. The old building has collapsed on top of the pit and there are other tunnels all over the area. After the mine time for more rocky downhill. We were only going 3-5 mph down the hill. You will come to a curve and on the rock wall you can see there is an active spring when there is water and another old mine. After that more downhill and some rocky drops and on to the murals the highlight of any visit to chloride. Then the trail is done all 17 miles. A trip to the town of Chloride is next an old mining town and actively lived in. A bar and some stores and a couple visitor sites. Put Chloride into Google and you will be able to see what they have to offer. When we cruised through town the local bar had a live band and some 50-60 bikers were in town for a cold beer. It was 200 miles on asphalt for me to get there and back but a great day for a good ride with a little 4X4 and some great views.
