New tires!

Sooooo I wanted to get new tires sometime soon. Some hoodlum stabbed a nice tear into the sidewall of my spare so I will be upgrading my tires sooner than I thought! Any thoughts on what type would be best? This jeep is my daily driver too and I don't have a lift on it... That will come later.

Treadwright. They're retreads which a lot of people are afraid of but I know nobody who has had any problems with them at all and they're unmatched on and off-road in their price range.

My brother has a set of the Guard Dogs on his FJ80 and wheels at least once a month, been on there almost 3 years now and at a 7000 lb load and 35000 miles they're still looking great and can match or beat my MT/R's whenever we head out. They're pretty quiet too and on the freeway they behave like a street tire.

Only option I'd suggest is their Kedge Grip, those things bite like nothing I've seen on the ice.

I run Falken Rocky Mountains from discount tire. Great price and after 35000 miles, I still have almost all of the tread left.

I am a big fan of mud treads, so Toyo MT or Goodyear MTRs. MTRs are a little more civil on the pavement. Kinda like the Toyo Howl though.

Thanks for all your input! So I was thinking of getting 4 new tires and having the spare be used..... Any reasons not to?

Replace all 5 so you can do a 5 way rotation. All the tires will wear more evenly.

I bought new 37's and then went used for the spare. Doubt I will ever use it. But it is a full size spare if needed. Have that setup on 2 rigs right now.

Sounds good!! Sooo another question since I'm new to upgrading a rig. I read something about changing the gears? First I have no idea what that means and second do I even need to do that? Ill be going from stock wrangler tires to 35's....

It is called the power band. Gears, transmission and engine combine with tire size to provide the correct power and create movement. Larger tires create more mass and make it all work harder. Also a larger diameter tire will make the gears turn slower, lowering RPM. Sometimes too low. What gears are you running now?

How do I find out and is it something I can change myself or I need to take it to a shop? Orrrr heyyyy when they put my new tires on will they do it?

Going to 35's you definitely want to change the gears. Personally, I would recommend not doing them yourself unless someone who knows what they are doing helps. Check out ringpinion.com

What do you have now? 4.10s can make the upsize tolerable. Anything numerically lower will cause big loss of power.

And no, tire shops do not do gears.

Getting new tires isn't as simple as I thought! Haha.... Would I change the gears first or get the tires put on first?

Lift, tires, gearing. Since it is your daily driver (depending on how long your commute is) I would consider saving up til you can do them all at the same time.

You never answered what gears you are running. I have 4.10s in my JKU and it does just fine. I have 5.13s to install if I ever park it long enough. The Missus has 3.73's in her JK with 37's . Again, acceptable like that on the road. I never use O/D in mine.

How do I tell what gears I run? I called the dealership and they said with 2013 wranglers you don't have to change gears, only something else (I don't remember, but it's $60!). My commute to work is 45 mins and I don't think ill be doing a lift anytime soon.... Too much money right now and I think 35's can still fit.

It's a 2013 jeep wrangler sport..,, !!! I love it! I'm so excited for this to be a hobby. Jet skiing is fun, but off roading can be done year round.

You will not get 35's under your JK without some sort of lift. Or completely remove the fenders. New rig. Look at the window sticker if you still have it. It will tell you the gears. Or go to Jeep .com and register your rig and get a build sheet. What the dealer told you is for re-programming the PCM so that your your speedometer reads correctly and your transmission shifts (if it is an Auto).

If it's a 2013, you more than likely have 3.21 gears. The tallest you can go without a lift is a 33, and that will be a tight fit, unless you add spacers or wide wheels with minimal offset. Most 2 1/2 inch lifts only recommend a 33" wheel. You would have to add fender flares like the bushwacker flat fenders plus a lift to fit 35's. Now, if your Jeep came with the 32" tires (255/75 17) you more than likely have 3.73 gears.

you don't HAVE to get new gears but it would help a lot, so when you have the money to do it it would be a good idea. and yeah 35s probably won't fit with those big fender flares you have if they did fit you would rub a lot and be hating life lol a lift would be a really good idea. and I use to have BFG KM2s on my last jeep and i loved them but i have gotten a lot of reviews that the sidewalls are really weak and have seen many of them blowing when out on the trail so when i put my 35s on this jeep i went with the Goodyear MTRs the new style with kevlar. A lot of people i know also run these and they haven't had any problems at all on or offroad. best tire out for all around use in my opinion. i went to discount tire and got 4 tires with the insurance just incase if anything happens and installed for about 1200.
