Well I prob got a good price cause I know the owner.... But 1200 seems steep.

$1200 is about average. It all depends on which gears you go with. C4wd quoted me this:

yukon gears: $1450 (they only have 4.88 since 4.56 are on backorder till Fall 2011)
Alloy gears: $1440 (These were my #1 choice but decided to go with nitro instead cause price)
Nitro gears $1312 (these are the gears i went with)
USA standard: $1405

Six states distributors quoted me these prices:
Six States Distributors

Nitro gears: $1450 +tax+diff fluid= ~$1600 they said
Dana gears: $1490 +diff fluid (only had dana gears for Dana44 rear, not Dana 30 so i had that quote including a Nitro front gear)

All the prices from C4wd include tax, diff fluid etc etc out the door.

I decided not to buy the gears separate from where i was getting them installed since i wanted the warranties from both the installation shop and the gears. If i bought the gears elsewhere and had C4wd or six states put them in, i would only get a few months of warranties. With the nitro gears i get two year warranty from Nitro and full warranty from C4wd

hope this helps some of you with your pricing and gearing question (s).

Ya, it is a bit steep. Most reputable shops charge 800 to 1000 to regear.

I don't know anything about the axle in a mustang but I do know that done properly it takes 8-10 hours to properly regear a Jeep axle. I wouldn't trust a shop that charges $175 per axle and can do a Dana 30 or Dana 35 regear in 2 hours. There maybe something totally different with a Mustang axle that it only takes a couple of hours to regear. When I regeared my Dana 30 It took me 10 hours and that did not count the time it took to remove and install the axle in the Jeep.

The ring and pinion alone cost $200 per axle. Plus you need an install kit and then add labor. I can do ring and pinion installs for $750-$800 per vehicle.

Thanks for the info Lumberjack and Chris. Time to start putting the beer money back into the Jeep fund. I'll probably save up this summer and get it done in the fall

The mustang had an 8.8. If u have an 8.8 go with ford racing gears. Idk anything about axles smaller than a d44 (as far as pricing) as I've never had a rig with < d44.

Probably leave here around 9:30. I think we're meeting around 10. There were a lot of people there today, so the parking lot filled up pretty quick.

Thank god I don't have carpet! Time for some bed liner. Thus experience taught me that I need a new hd front bumper. Anyone have a plasma cutter I can use? Time to build a bumpa!

The trick to handling anything John challenges you to is to make him do it first.
