Def not going to the rock garden. I am not crazy like some of you lol i just like to have a good time and take it up a notch each time i go out

Maybe i will go. Thats all i need is to mess the gears up with my luck and then have them not covered under warranty. But i will let you guys know if i decide to take the leap and go

Lumberjack - the whole gear break-in thing doesn't really exist. If you call a place that does them in stuff much larger than jeeps (six states) they will tell you just to drive it like normal as there is no break-in required

Seriously what is there to break in?? They either match up and work or they don't. 500 miles isn't going to change that.

Thats weird because i called sixstates and they said 500 miles was a break in period for gears when they install them, unless it is vehicle specific and jeeps are the odd ones. Even though i had the gears installed at C4wd, who also stated the 500 mile theory. AOR, David at northern4x4 and a couple gentlemen i spoke to when i called 4wd.com stated 500 break in.

Its not the matching up of the gears or whether they work or not (i said the same thing when i was told i had to break them in) its the fact that the gears have to heat then cool over an "easy" 500 miles of driving so that they can better match up and so that the coating that is on the gears can heat, cool and set properly.

This is not "me" making this up. This is what i was told by C4wd and sixstates (when i was looking into them doing my gears). Along with many other members on this forum including the well known Jerry Bransford on here stated the break in of the gears. Here is a PM he responded to when i wrote him:

"Lumberjack, I drive it for an hour and let it cool off, then I'll drive it a little more and let it cool off again. I also like to make sure the lube has some friction modifier in it which, according to some gear "gurus" I know, feel it helps the gears to run cooler during the break in process. Most gear lubes already have the friction modifier added to it so I guess you could ask the installer to show you what he used and if it has the friction modifier additive present. It's no big deal if it does not however. You can always add 4 oz. on your own if you're so inclined.

I do change my gear lube after 500 miles to get rid of the small particulates generated from the break-in process ( <<<< ) I also prefer running a conventional gear lube in my axles and not a synthetic. Several axle manufacturers I know have found the gears run cooler with a conventional gear lube. Personally I run either Torco or Valvoline 85W-140 but any major brand of GL-5 gear lube will be fine".

Steel is already tempered. It will never get hot enough as long as it is lubricated to change. As for Jerry I will not comment further

Im just trying to back myself up a little ya know. I am new to the whole jeep world and have done quite a bit and put quite a lot of money into my jeep to want or have anything go wrong. Thats all. I was told by peeps that 500 miles was the "break in" period. Its kinda like telling a kid to go stand in the corner for 15 minutes and then once he gets to that 15 min mark go crazy and do whatever

here is an article i just read

New Gear Break In

Ted- this is what your getting at huh. I just found this on a different forum.

with all that said, i also know people that say that gear "break-in" is b.s. the thought behind "break-in" is that because you have two surfaces that wear against each other and when parts are new, those surfaces don't match up perfectly. the heat cycles during the break-in procedures are thought to allow for the surfaces to establish a perfect match and a controlled wear pattern that have the same pattern at all speeds and loads (hence varying the speed for 500 miles).

the people who think you don't have to "break-in" gears say that the metal on the gears has already been heat-treated from the factory, and that they were heated a hell of a lot hotter than you driving on the gears can make them. essentially, they say the heat from driving on the gears isn't hot enough to matter, so no break-in is not necessary.

Another good question is why after installing new gears do you have to take it easy for the first 500 miles since when you buy a new jeep etc with gears you can beat the heck out of it right out of the lot. Interesting.

Anyways i wont take anymore thread space about the gears lol

six states told someone else that it doesn't matter and they install diffs in tractor and immediately hook up a 90k load and haul it across the country. I wouldn't worry about it but that is just me. Hope to see you there even if you take it real easy.

Not me either! Id just take it easy..

I got a bit stuck today, basically couldnt make it up a hill cuz of the loose dirt, and i backed down without looking, ran a bit off course and backed into a tree, not fast or anything but it took me off the trail a bit so my front tires were impeded by a ridge of earth. Had to be pulled out, and thankfully had my new front bumper installed lol.. i would've been screwed without it.

My wifes last SUV had 3 miles on it when we bought it day one and day 4 it had 3100 miles on it. I know it wasn't a jeep but I think a jeep is tougher than it was
