My warn came with several suggestions. One of them was hook the winch to a tree, and pull the jeep towards the tree (or other immovable object) while lightly applying the brakes to increase tension.
What I did is I parked the jeep at the top of a hill, chocked the wheels, and pulled my dads jeep up the hill. Ideally, you want to let all but (I believe) 5 rolls on the winch out, and then guide the rope in so it spools all pretty like.
