Took a run up the Boise Ridge Road from Rocky Canyon (Shaw Mountain Road) to Bogus Basin. Nice drive, not too busy - a few motorbikes between the top of Hulls Ridge and 8th Street and a nice, naked, blue TJ going the other way (sadly the photo was really blurry).
Anyone driven Forest Service Road 311 up near Grimes Creek this year yet? Is it open? What is the run like? Thinking of heading up there this Friday, June 10th.
Looking at Google earth I don't think I've ever driven FS 311 before, but it looks like a nice little drive. With the heat we've had this past week I'd be really surprised if it wasn't clear, but you'll probably have to call the Idaho City ranger station to know for certain.
I can't wait for my Willys to get built and delivered so I can get back out on some trails. If you do head up there let us know how the drive is.
It would be great to meet up with you. We will be at the parking area at the intersection of Grimes Creek Road and Idaho 21 around 10:30. I will PM you my cell number. Look for a naked Hydro Blue Willys JK with 3 people. We will also likely be on CB channel 4.
You are very welcome. It was fun and, as you said, beautiful country. I'll post a brief report and some pics soon. We are really looking forward to Boulder City.
Here are some photos from the run along Forest Road 311 near Idaho City. The road starts on the right just after turning off Idaho 21 onto Grimes Creek Road. It climbs round the back of the ridge with some pretty views into the creek. We encountered a flock of sheep on the way up. Once you hit the top of the ridge the road tracks it with spectacular views to either side, over to Bogus Basin to the west. The road is in very good shape with a few rough spots and the odd place where a sedan would bottom out, but nothing technical. There were some pretty big slash piles from logging activity towards the north end. We turned right onto the New Centerville road and headed down to Idaho City for ice cream at Sarsaparillas for lunch. The last two photos show the ridge the road follows and were taken from Shafer Butte the following day.
I'm out this weekend. Might try and do something the 25th or 26th. Head up to Bonneville Point early in the morning and enjoy some coffee and doughnuts while the sun comes up over the mountains onto Boise. Then go up Lucky Peak Trail for some lunch.
I have been the back way once. Once you cross the river you take one of the first rights. It's the same right that people take when they use the OHV area for side-by-sides. I think you can see the area from the highway.
The back way has some nice views.
We took a trip up to Silver City and on to the top of War Eagle Mountain today. Both roads were pretty easy. To get to the top of War Eagle Mountain you follow the BLM road number F483. The top stretch to War Eagle Mountain looks more interesting - we hiked it as the exit right crew didn't want that much adventure alone late on Sunday in the Owyhees. There are loads of trails up there to explore....we saw a few Jeeps and loads of ATVs. Here are some photos.
The Idaho 4x4 club is taking a drive up Tiddie Springs rd. on Sunday the 26th. Stock rigs with good tires can make this run. Everyone is welcome to come along.
Meet at Dans Ferry at 8:30am pull out at 9:00am

Idaho Off-Road 4x4 Club Expedition Run to Tiddie Spring - part 1
Here are a few pictures from our trip to Tiddie Spring deep in the Owyhee Mountains. It was a fun trail with a bit of everything - dirt road, water crossings, loose rocks, rock crawling (at least for us). Visited Tiddie Spring which did not smell good so took our lunch break at Montini's cabin. Here are some pictures....
At the last minute we decided to take a short drive up to Sunset Mountain Lookout (to hike the Hungarian Ridge Trail). The road up was a fun if easy drive and the views on the drive and the hike were spectacular. The views from up at Sunset have to be among the best in the Boise National Forest. And there was no-one else up there - no Jeeps, no ATVs, no motorbikes, nobody.

Anyone up for a run from Wilson Creek to Reynolds creek via the old Pigeon road. It's a fun 2 to 3 hour run about 45 minutes from Boise. I ran it with 35s no problem and even with 33s its good. There are bypasses on some of the rough points.
Overall a very fun run.
Meet Sunday July 31st @ 0900 Mc Donalds/Phillips 66 I84 exit 38 South onto Garrity.
Chance to gas up, grab quick breakfast if you haven't eaten.
It's a slightly technical road with no real big scare factors...I.E. huge drop offs or close to edge of the road.
Vehicle reccomendations: 33s for some of the ruts but I could do it in a stock rubicon.
Bring plenty of water and sunscreen as it gets a little hot and a little windy.
There is plenty to play in and around before we get to the Pigeon road and plenty to see. I can get you to the old China ditches awesome views, before Pigeon road.
See ya there!
Did you guys make the run? How was it? Can you tell me which roads to take?
