Drove this stretch yesterday three days into walkabout, gorgeous drive. Now in Montana heading north, but want to go back through this stretch as I saw LOTS of dirt roads heading off to one side or the other as I went through there.

Any recommendations? I'd love to spend at least a day or two exploring around in there - trails, fishing holes, backwoods camping.

Any info appreciated in advance.

Cheers, B

Yes that is an awesome stretch. lots if camping and dirt roads but no real off roading per se. Lolo motorway takes off from parachute Hill Rd across from lochsa lodge over 100 miles of dirt road. Fish Creek comes out at I90 fish Creek exit. All kinds of camping and fishing hoodo pass comes out at Superior. Lots of roads are gated but still lots of roads are open. Just buy a forest service map and take a few days to explore.
The beargrass and lupine should be in full bloom. Lolo motorway is usually open by July 4 but had a big snow year and there will be a lot of downed trees to clear.

let me know if it is open, but I will be surprised if it is tho. Where are you getting on at, Weippe? the road from Greet to Weippe is pretty cool in of itself. I Have done a ton of motorcycling in that area. there is not many places to jump off once you are on it so it is possible that you will come to downed logs (way to many to cut or move) and have to back track out. Some very cool places to camp on the motorway tho.

powell campground by lochsa lodge is nice too. you can camp right by the creek and walk up to the lodge to sip beer and eat.
