Actually, these are the REAL rules for gunfighting:

Marine Corps Rules for Gun Fighting

1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns.

2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life is expensive.

3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.

4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough nor using cover correctly.

5. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and diagonal movement are preferred.)

6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and a friend with a long gun.

7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running.

9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

11. Always cheat; always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

12. Have a plan.

13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work.

14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible.

15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.

16. Don't drop your guard.

17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees.

18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. In God we trust. Everyone else, keep your hands where I can see them.

19. Decide to be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.

20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

22. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.

23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

24. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with a "4."

Navy Rules for Gun fighting:

1. Go to Sea

2. Send the Marines

3. Drink Coffee

Oh, I just like these
1. "Aim Small, Miss Small" -The Patriot

2. "Now remember, when things look bad and it looks like you're not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean. I mean plumb, mad-dog mean. 'Cause if you lose your head and you give up then you neither live nor win. That's just the way it is."- The Outlaw Josey Wales

3. "You go for a man hard enough and fast enough, he don't have time to think about how many's with him; he thinks about himself, and how he might get clear of that wrath that's about to set down on him."- True Grit

4. "When the man with a 45 meets the man with a rifle, you said the man with a pistol is a dead man. Let's see if it's true"- Fistful of Dollars

5. "I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?" - Dirty Harry

US Army rules for gunfighting:

1. Send drone.
2. Have drone kill everthing on street.
3. Celebrate.

Bullshit.

What I learned in sniper school can be abbreviated into three simple words:

ISOLATE AND ELIMINATE

This can be applied to the enemy, whether foreign or DOMESTIC; it can also be applied to the smaller, simpler problems we encounter in our lives.

And I don't know how the Marines can continue calling themselves badasses when they freely admit that #5 on the above list is an option. From day 1 in Infantry basic training, the Army is taught to ALWAYS move TOWARDS the fight. Moving away is NEVER an option.

I spent 6 years in the Marines and my MOS was 0331 Infantry Machine Gunner. I don't know where they got that move away from the fight BS.

We were always taught to establish fire superiority and then advance towards the enemy. Since we are all expert marksmen we were also taught to use the effective range of the M-16 which was good up to 500 yards. That's 500 yards without a scope. I can put 10 out of 10 rounds into a dinner plate at 500 yards without a scope all day long with an M-16. So yes distance can be your friend but I was NEVER taught to move away from the enemy.

Good to hear. I'm glad to know that you guys aren't running away from the fight like he proposed. And congrats on your shooting skills. I'm well aware how effective an M16 can be...I also have extensive experience with it and much larger caliber precision rifles. As a former Army SNIPER, I have a hard time with regular FORSCOM guys using the word "expert" when describing their shooting skills. Good...yes. Very good...maybe. Expert...probably not. But at least you guys are closing with and destroying the enemy. I was starting to wonder when I read #5 on his list.

This "list" was printed as a joke. There are no "gun fighting" rules and regulations.

It's a gun fight.

I thought one of the main jobs of the Marines was to make things safe for the Army? :-)

The average response time of a 911 call is 23 minutes, the response time of a .357 is 1400 feet per second.

if you want to get technical the response time of any fire arm is how long it takes you to squeeze the trigger. I don't care if its a .22 or a .50 bang is bang and dead is dead

In the South Carolina State Museum one of the displays has the actual official rules of dueling.
Gotta think duels wouldn't have been as popular if everyone had a Glock though.
