500th post coming from England!

Well I am sitting here in London after 3 days of doing the tourist thing with the family. Wed we will go to Lancaster where my daughter is currently doing a semester abroad. This is my first trip out of country and I feel like "country goes to town". London is almost overwhelming with all the different cultures and the sheer size of the city. The worst thing so far is the fact that I have to rely on other modes of transportation to get around. However I really like the Underground. So easy to use and much cleaner than any US subway I have seen. And you can definitely spot an American over here!

And for ccain, I promise to raise a Guiness for you when we get into northern England. We are going to let my now 18 yo son have his first beer while here...told him he could start with a guiness until my daughter let him in on how the guiness would be compared to an American beer! Well gotta check on train schedules now that I finally have internet again (4 days with no WF...it's a record!)

I have taken tons of pix already and have plans for more the rest of the week. This is an exciting trip for me having never been out of the US. Gives a whole renewed respect for being an American. Seeing all the pageantry involved with the British Crown and how it all transpired over the years you get a feeling of how young our nation is. At the same time you also realize what our soldiers have fought to preserve in all the wars. We have a great place to call home and I really have a higher understanding of that now.

(BTW I have not lifted a Guiness yet) I want that to be in small pub in the north country

PS. Just got word my son has been accepted to East Carolina Univ.....happy as hell and wonder when I'll will ever get to do any mods!

Ya, I live in Lechlade which on your map is about 8 miles north east of Swindon. About 70 some miles due west of London on the M4 motorway.
I do recommend coming this direction, but not to see me, to see the wonderful country side. They call this area over here The Cotswolds. It is very beautiful and there is so much to see. Tons of tiny villages to see that look very old and probably are. Kinda like the one I live in.
This is a quote from the cotswolds.org website.

Where are you planning on visiting while your over here?

Ohh and yes you have to sample the Guinness while your over here, and you definitely need to cut your son a slice too so he can go back to the states and brag to his friends. I heard this morning from one of the local firemen that the Guinness is even better in Ireland. You can get 2 tokens per person for free half pints if you do the tour at the Guinness brewery in Dublin and you get to pour the perfect pint.GUINNESS STOREHOUSE® | What?s Inside | Dublin Tourist Attractions, Ireland Tourist Attractions I did get to sample the Guinness in Ireland while I was laid over in Shannon on my way back from Iraq but that was a few years ago.

Good luck and have fun. Lots of fun and congratulations to your son for getting in to East Carolina University.

Yes this is a great place to visit, but I can't wait to get to Northern England. The people are said to be nicer in the countryside than here. I feel like I am in India at times. Not to mention the amount of people here...I am not used to large city life. Probably similar to NYC. At least there I could figure out the signs on the roads!

Made it back to the US! So happy to be home too. We left London on the 4th day and went north to the Lake District. Stayed in Lancaster near the university. The towns are mixed with really old buildings and newer stuff right next to it. Lancaster even has a castle owned by the Queen. Travelled further north into Scotland to Edinburgh. Toured the castle after walking up the Royal Mile. It is built on the highest point in Edinburgh and has been there since the mid 11th century.

Had a few pints of Guinness at a couple of English pubs. I must say I was delightfully surprised. I really only drink Americanized types of beer and not that often. The Guinness was really smooth and did not have a strong aftertaste. Gotta admit it was good cold. Don't know if I could have handled it warm though! Let my son try some and he decided beer was not gonna be his choice when he is old enough to drink in the US. (the face he made should have been captured on film...there is just no describing it )
