A Bad Call

Ok I know most of you have no idea what I am about to type so please just bear with me as I need to get this off my chest.
As most of ya'll know I work as a Firefighter/Paramedic. Today was a normal morning, at about 7:30 we got a call for a 7 y/o girl choking. Nothing really new in this neck of the woods considering most of our population is under the age of 18. A couple of minutes goes by and dispatch advises us that she is unconcious and CPR is inprogress. well this changed things. It waas all in slow motion. We did our best and I KNOW that God's Will will be done, but I feel like a failure. She had a plastic coke bottle top lodged on top of her vocal cords. she had been chewing on it, waiting with her dad to go to school. After all was said and done she did have a pulse when we left the hospital. They flew her to the nearest Trauma 1 center a little bit latter. But I feel horrible. We went through CSID this afternoon. And it did help. But I feel bad. Well thank you for letting me get this off my chest. I was just looking for a place to vent.

Hardy,
I've been wearing a badge for several years now in a big violent city. I know watching a kid die can be tough. I've seen more than my share of people die at my feet and done CPR a few times too. I don't usually get upset and I'm fairly good at remaining detached, but kids effect me differently. I guess it's their innocence. It's good to vent, and much healthier than drinking or fighting. Take solis in the fact that you did your best and leave it at that.

Hardy -
It is good to let things like this out if they bother you. Just know that you did everything in your power to help the situation. Take care.

I had an 11 year old boy playing in the attic with his 6 year old sister, for some reason they had setup a rope and were pretending to hang, the boys chair broke and the little girl could not hold him up, the parents were 3 floors down and never heard a thing. I still have nitemares about what the little girl who is now about 46 went thru.
I had a 3 month old baby bleed out on the front floor of a car that was in an accident, the front was mangled so bad we could not reach her, I got off the squad after that.
Sometimes there is just nothing that you can do, nothing. Dam, I thought I had buried that back far enough not to bother me anymore...

Hang in there. You did the best you could and you should feel good about that. If it helps, go back and talk to her parents to see how she's doing and let them know you're pulling for them. I'm sure they appreciated everything you did.

You can't change what has happened, but you can influence what will happen. Say a prayer or make a visit. It will help.

I just want to pop on here and thank you guys. We've had to use our share of the firefighter/paramedic services over the past few years-three pretty potentially bad accidents in the last four years. My boy and hubby have been lucky but with help, they got the medical services they needed right away and prevented much worse. Sadly my nephew was not able to be helped but he had already died before assistance, but they came and tried to help him anyway and that is comforting.

Most of you guys are taken for granted until we desperately need your help. You help so many and sadly can't fix it for everyone but you try your best and then some.
Thank you.

I do feel better about getting it off my chest. Thank you for all of the support. I recieved a phone call this morning, (I am working a 48) and I found out that she passed away late last night. The positive news is that mom and dad decided to donate. Hopefully this will help several others. I am like you Joe Dirt (is it French?) I usually am good at staying detached. I have worked my fair share of peds calls. But things are diffrent this time, I think mainly because I now have a small child myself.

Thank you so much for all of the support and prayers. That is more of what we need in this Great Country, Prayer.

Oh damn Hardy... damn damn damn. I was hoping for a happy ending. Sometimes though, it's time and when it's a child it seems so unfair, but life is life. What very strong parents to be able to donate. Good for them, I hope the fact that their daughter will help someone, even in death, will make this ordeal a little easier for them... and for you.
