a request to the military guys on the forum...

Yup, as usual, I'm up to something. I'm researching a character for a new novel and need some more perspective. I've been working with CCain and reading a couple books (gut wrenching books I might add) and would love some personal thoughts or events on military life in general, both on and off the fields.

Now, I understand, certain things are not pleasant to bring to the surface and probably are best not posted on the open forum. All I would love to hear is an event, something that stuck in your mind, any kind of event. I'm looking for a little insight into military men. Yes, men, because my character is a guy. I know there are lots of women out there serving, but I need to have images and thoughts from the male point of view.

It can be a couple of sentences or more, I don't care. Hell, tell me about boot camp. Tell me about the moment you decided to join, tell me about the moment you entered a war zone. Tell me about coming home. If you're not comfortable posting, send me a PM. I will not use the statements for anything but help in building my character.

If you're interested in reading a couple of very short and sort of rough excerpts, go here.... excerpts.

OK TINY, ill tell you about this day in boot camp i remember......

the platoon just came back from chow and one of the recruits laughed about something while running up the stairwell, and the drill instructor heard him, but of course no one wanted to take the blame for it cause they knew the drill instructors would give them something to laugh about..so anyways the drill insructor took the guide (the head recruits) and the squad leaders to the quarter deck to get "smoked", but before he started he had those five recruits drink two canteens of water, and then began with a non stop of pushups, mountain climbers, jumpin jacks and so on, til the recruits started puking, so the drill instructor just stood on the foot locker and made them to continue working out, once they all puked and were in tears, mind you know one fessed up yet, our DI had them drink another canteen of water and continue to work and of course leading to more puking..hahhaaa, well by the time it was all over the whole platoon, (85 recruits ended up in an all out brawl cause no one had integrity), i remember the drill instructor yelling (ZERO), its the marine corps were all brain washed so we all frose, he said, now that i got you to snap, we can finally work as a team..hahaha i miss those days

In 1993 I was sent to Ft. Sherman Panama. I went on a training mission in the Mahunga Swamp (sp). The swamp is full of mangrove trees and black tar-like smelly mud. My boot got stuck in the mud so badly it got ripped off my foot. I started to get trenchfoot. Every bug known to mankind lives there. As I brushed against a tree, a trail of termites poured down my shirt. Of course the air is also full of masquitos, making me look like I got chicken pox. During the nightime, vampire bats attacked, depriving us of sleep. It was great. Some of the best training I ever went to. I know- I'm sick and twisted.

Sucks to be the guide. I ended up one at both boot camp and SOI. I got thrashed a lot because of other people's f-ups.

2042. 2042. 2042.

And Ft Sherman, Panama both sucks and is wonderful at the same time.

PS - Tiny - will send U a PM.
