Active logging road etiquette

We mostly do logging roads in the rockies ( western alberta / eastern british columbia), and sometimes see signs saying MUST CALL, followed by a radio frequency. We went on trails like this without much worry, since we almost never actually run into a lumber truck. Well, a couple weeks ago we were in the wild, and almost got blown off the road by two huge trucks... Even though we were on the edge of a big drop, they literally FLEW by us, at i swear no more than an inch or two away from the driver side mirror. I wouldn't have minded too much if they scratched the fender, but if they did hit us we'd be rolling down the cliff! Later on the road we ran into a supervisor and asked if we were allowed on that road or if we should just tuen back. He was super nice and explained all about the cb radio communications, and that if we dont call the drivers just plow through as if nothing was there.

I can borrow a cb radio from a family friend that has a few, but what exactly am i supposed to say when i go on the trail?? Is there a specific lingo that must be used, or do i just go on that frequency and just broadcast out that a jeep is entering the road?? Also, how often do i need to update my location? Forest roads here are really well marked, and every kilometer of road is numbered; do i need to broadcast my position every few kms?

In the Oregon Outback, most active logging roads have a sign posted what channel is in use. The key is not so much "what words do I use" but "where" "when" and "THAT" you do use them.

80000+ loads going downhill regardless of care or intent of any driver, means SOMEBODY better speak up, as they ascend the road. Same applies for going back down. They know THEY are there....they don't know YOU are there. Anywhere. In something tiny. Whatever they may feign concern.....it's YOUR(*our*) problem in any case.

You're lucky only the underoos were involved.

Signal strength of typical CBs are limited, terrain makes for short distance and odd reception, and any questions should be resolved according to local custom.

Entry tx at bottom of spur, starting any move around limited line of sight, and confirmation by those headed down hill requires practice & close attention.

I've ridden with a few truck drivers on log roads and it terrifies me being in the BIG truck. Their job is to get the load down the hill & to the mill. Mostly they strive to keep themselves out of the ditch, and maybe they can avoid mashing civilians along the route.

Good luck. Keep your eyes open and stay on YOUR side---if you have one, often they take their share out of both sides of a "one-lane road with turnouts".....

Like said, you just need to say something. I'd go with vehicle("jeep", don't get fancy as CBs aren't great), the road you're on and your direction of travel. Then ask if its all clear. These logging trucks are huge and drive fast and don't worry about traffic because there usually isn't any and when there is, they radio ahead. If you can get actually off the road when one is coming, do it. I know you had a cliff which was the limiting factor, but "sharing" the road on a logging road, means the smaller vehicle slows or stops and gives the bigger one as much space as possible. Just a guess that the jeep will be the smaller guy

First of all a loaded truck ALWAYS has the right of way, in the case of log truck vs jeep I would say anytime!
Upon entering the marked road you should transmit on the designated frequency what vehicle and how many rigs there are total, and which way you are headed (up, down, etc.) then when you come across a km marker (or sometimes a hand painted sign with a number on it is used) announce the markers number. If it is in an area with a longer sight distance you can skip that one however in an area with alot of corners and not much forward sight distance you should announce your location more frequent or if you hear someone answer you. If there is a truck closing in on you he will usually answer and tell you his location.

I run into this situation fairly often in WA state during the spring and summer. i'm not sure what the "official" ettique is but this is what we do.

As SOON as you enter and active logging area reset you trip meter so you know exactly where you are. It's very important.

I use "Alert, alert! Green jeep Wrangler traveling North bound on Forest Service road 7200 entering active logging area now. Please advise any South bound traffic, over".

If no response; repeat every 1/8th mile with your current location until you raise someone. Drive slow with stereo off and windows down.

Repeat with your updated location;
"Alert, alert! Green jeep Wrangler traveling North bound on Forest Service road 7200 at 1.5 miles into active logging area. Please advise any South bound traffic, over".

They will usually respond quickly" Hey Jeeper we got 1 truck, 2 truck , etc. Southbound at 2 miles in, over.
"
Respond right away, pull over and stop if there's a turn out.
"Copy that. Jeep Wrangler stopped at 1.5 miles in to active logging area waiting for you to pass."

If there is no turnout alert them immediatly.

"Driver! Jeep has no current pullout, travelling Northbound 1 mile active logging area."

If a skidder is blocking the road or picker is loading a truck;
Alert them to your presence and politely request passage when it's safe to proceed.

After you pass thank them and let them and include time you plan to return in the opposite direction.

These guys are working, getting upset or copping an attitute won't get you anywhere.

There's usually a individual or small crew that stays behind in a beat up trailer to keep an eye on the equipment.

If you need to speak with them, two short blasts on you horn to announce your presence and yell "hello, anyone home?" from 10 yards away from the trailer.

They're usually armed and expecting trouble so don't go pounding on the door like cop with a warrant.

I saw them rolling down a big hill so pulled to the side as much as i could and stopped to let them by. I usually do try to pull out as much as i can, but on that little section it was quite tight. Bottom line, it was an eye oppener, and we'll travel better prepared.

I really like this, i'm gonna do pretty much what you said! And yes, we do respect the fact that they're working while we're having fun, that's a given. Thanks everyone for your inputs!
