Age/Gun Law Clarification

So I was wondering if any of you guys knew where to to find the ruling on this. I want to go target shooting at a friends house with my little .22 rifle. If I were to be pulled over with the rifle in a locked case in the back seat of my Jeep, what are the legal ramifications for a 17 year old in the state of Virginia? I know I'm allowed to "own" one, and also be in possession of it, but I'm not sure if I can drive with it or not.

A firearm is a firearm, does not matter the caliber. If state law says that you can't be in possesion of one, then having one in your vehicle would be a violation. Read up on your state laws to be sure.

I am not a lawyer, nor have I played one on TV.

I believe that in Virginia you have to be 18 to own possess a rifle without an "adult" present and must be 21 for a handgun. If you are planning on transporting your firearm make sure its secured out of your reach with the ammo seperate from the firearm

The only limitation I can find is for assault rifles and pistols.
Quote:
§ 18.2-308.7. Possession or transportation of certain firearms by persons under the age of 18; penalty.

It shall be unlawful for any person under 18 years of age to knowingly and intentionally possess or transport a handgun or assault firearm anywhere in the Commonwealth. For the purposes of this section, "handgun" means any pistol or revolver or other firearm originally designed, made and intended to fire single or multiple projectiles by means of an explosion of a combustible material from one or more barrels when held in one hand and "assault firearm" means any (i) semi-automatic centerfire rifle or pistol which expels single or multiple projectiles by action of an explosion of a combustible material and is equipped at the time of the offense with a magazine which will hold more than 20 rounds of ammunition or designed by the manufacturer to accommodate a silencer or equipped with a folding stock or (ii) shotgun with a magazine which will hold more than seven rounds of the longest ammunition for which it is chambered. A violation of this section shall be a Class 1 misdemeanor.

This section shall not apply to:

1. Any person (i) while in his home or on his property; (ii) while in the home or on the property of his parent, grandparent, or legal guardian; or (iii) while on the property of another who has provided prior permission, and with the prior permission of his parent or legal guardian if the person has the landowner's written permission on his person while on such property;

2. Any person who, while accompanied by an adult, is at, or going to and from, a lawful shooting range or firearms educational class, provided that the weapons are unloaded while being transported;

3. Any person actually engaged in lawful hunting or going to and from a hunting area or preserve, provided that the weapons are unloaded while being transported; and

4. Any person while carrying out his duties in the Armed Forces of the United States or the National Guard of this Commonwealth or any other state.

I would highly recommend contacting the state attorney generals office to make certain.

not to sure about virginia but i kno its a federal law so im guessing it applies to every state.

i actually went to CSPD about this kind of thing the other day.

it is illegal for a minor to have a gun with him without an adult with range unless lawfully hunting, in which the adult has to be within 100 yards.

aslo it is illegal for a minor to drive a car with a gun in it unless acommidated by an adult

plus most shoot ranges wont let you shoot unless your 18 or u have an adult present

I'm pretty familiar with federal law but I'm not aware of any federal regulation against a minor possessing or transporting a firearm within state borders.
I'd appreciate a link if you can find it.

Okay I got an answer. I talked to my friends dad that is fairly high up in security at an airport, and after talking to a deputy he said that I should be fine provided it is unloaded, ammunition is kept separate, holds <20 rounds, and kept in the padlocked gun case. This is the code he pointed me to.
