Anybody else catch Doomsday Preppers?

So I was watching it last night, and they had this guy in Boston who basically mail ordered a Columbian wife, and they coincided her arrival with the filming of the episode. He kept explaining to her about prepping, and on her first day in the US took her on a 7 hour each way "bug out" to 50 bare acres in an RV.

The whole time I was thinking, does he really not get it? Did the producers intend to send the social message?

Prepping is preparing for a self-sufficient life at a moments notice. The woman he brought here had lived nearly all of her live in a community wide self sufficient manner. She was prepped from birth, out of neccesity. 6 billion people have no "need" to prep, as we call it. Yet here she is, with this dude, on super prepper extreme home makeover.

Wtf? Anybody else cath that? Found it a bit funny myself.

Also, I found the couple afraid of a flood yet living where they know it will happen absolutly hilarious. Food doesn't help unless you grow some gills, lol.

I did. I felt bad for the woman when she said something like "I didn't know I was coming here to die." any mention of him saying he told her all this BEFORE she came? I don't think so. He said he studied her culture. I guess be didn't think she may not want to live that way.

The first thing I thought with the quake family and them worrying about an earthquake was "why are you putting glass food jars on a top shelf?" All that would fall in a heart beat. That said, their food stores were impressive, but all that would be under water too, as was mentioned.

I avoid these shows because they give really poor advice, they tend to over exaggerate the potential survivability of the preppers and like all reality TV they are heavily scripted.

Carlsbad, I totally agree. For those same reasons I find it very comical. They always give some idiot whose plan is to walk 15 miles to a gokart in an abandoned taco hut and then take the Ol' Blackbird Trail to Mexico a likely survival rating. Hilarious stuff really.

And they always have people afraid of geographical disasters that live in the impact zone. You don't need papers to move; if you think the Canary Islands are gonna seriously flood the east coast, don't live there. Duh.

I've only watched a couple of episodes; one of them featured a music producer named "Big Al" or something. He was obese and walked like everything hurt, and would get winded just going up a flight of stairs. He looked like he had one foot in the grave and the other one on a banana peel to me. I thought to myself - you're preparing to survive against all odds in a disaster, yet you're killing yourself?

I agree that the show is not meant to accurately depict anything. It's "entertainment" so they're going to look for the freaks.

This show is more funny than anything.
On the opening credits there is a family standing in their driveway with guns. When you pause it and take a look, it's all airsoft guns with orange tips and 2 Nerf guns.

I watch the show regularly but only to compare my preps to theirs. Some of the people are really prepared, even if they're nutty as hell, and others are beyond rediculous.

I try not to take any of the"reality" shows seriously but they sure are entertaining at times.

People who say they're preppers amuse me. Don't you think you'd want to downplay any prepping you're doing? If an incident occurs that you have to put a REAL SHTF or TEOTWAWKI plan into action, there are going to be two kinds of people...the "haves" and the "have nots". The "have nots" are going to go straight to the "haves" and want their stuff. Desperate people find pretty imaginative ways to separate the "haves" from their property. And I know, the admitted preppers will talk about how badass they are, but in the end, all it takes is someone just a little bit more prepared to kill you than you are to kill them to separate you from your stuff.

Another of my pet peeves is people who post pics of their weapons on this forum. It's a PUBLIC forum, and unless you're posting from your iPad or iPhone, you're posting your pics to a PUBLIC photo sharing site prior to posting them to this forum. Do you REALLY want everyone to know what you have in your arsenal? Blows my mind.

Moral of my post?

If you're a prepper, don't get on a public forum and admit it. Just do it quietly and go to bed at night knowing that you've got a secret that might actually save not only your life, but your loved ones as well. In the Army, we learned about OPSEC and what it means not only to your life, but also to the guy holding a rifle to your left and to your right. The rest of the population needs to learn about OPSEC as well...

I saw part of one episode where they got in a Wrangler, but the interior shots were not a Jeep... OPSEC?

I also find the show amusing and entertaining and not a guide on how to prepare. One thing that always gets me are the people who are preparing solely for one kind of disaster scenario. You would think that they would want to be a little more dynamic and plan for whatever is thrown at them.

Smile...I can imagine prepping for an EMP, and then an earthquake hits and I say "CRAP", I didn't plan on THAT!"

Kidding aside, I like watching this program. It gives me ideas on what I can do to be better prepared for things that could happen. I liked the one where the woman was carrying a backpack around with lots of stuff in it. They self defense guy went through her backpack or bag and found a lollypop and said "this is perfect!"
