Anybody know anything about heatpumps?

Mine is having an issue. Toasted the t-stat yesterday and the tech overheated the compressor, since he couldn't remember on a Trane which thing does what. Any way, after replacing the t-stat and waiting 2 hrs on overtime for the comp. to cool off, it works fine, but.... he said the crankcase heater burnt up and needs to be replaced. Is this due to the compressor overheating? I will have to have it replaced, but if it's due to him overheating the comp, then I'm gonna expect a break somewhere... If it's just a thing that happens, then I'm ok with that too. This is on a 30 year old Trane heatpump.... yeah, I know, I'd like to get the other one paid off, before I have to replace this one....

Thanks for any help you can give.

30 yrs for a heat put is darn good. While I can't say that it was the tech's fault for the issue, I also can't say that it was not.. over heating something does not sounds like a good thing and if he admitted a mistake then I think the company should cut a deal for you.

Yeah, I was told it was on it's last legs a few years ago when the downstairs unit had to be replaced... Fortunately it only serves the upstairs which is just bedrooms and baths... so it doesn't have to work too hard. I kind of think they should cut me a deal too, but then, he didn't have to admit that he overheated the comp. either.... I guess I'll probably have to just suck it up and pay full price for the part and labor. After it cost me $330 to get my freakin' thermostat replaced yesterday....
