anyone have this illness?

I haven't been on the forum too much lately as I've been dealing with a weird health problem I just got.

it started as a mild pain on my tailbone last Thursday evening. by Friday morning I was having trouble getting up/down and sitting. things stayed that way till Saturday night. I got very sick. my temp was 104, sweating, chills, and I developed a migrain headache. so after 10 minutes of trying to get into the car (the jeep was impossible) I drove myself to the ER. I had a red tender area about the size of a fist at this point, and I'm thinking I got bit by a spider that was hiding in my clothes, explaining my tailbone and sickness.

as it turns out, I have a pilonidal absess. I got loads of good painkillers, and antibiotics. Sunday morning until now it's been nothing short of HELL. I can't sit, stand, walk...anything. the pain is insane. this morning my headaches went away, and I have what looks like a large nasty pimple on my tailbone. so I sucked it up and stabbed it with a knife. it hurt like crazy, but I'm at least somewhat mobile now. I've missed almost 1 week of work now because of this thing.

I've been reading online and apparently the only cure is to get a hole bored into my a** the size of a tennis ball. so I'm asking, does anyone here suffer from this horrific disease or know someone? how did you/they deal with it?

on a fun side note, this is also called "jeep disease" apparently soldiers used to get it during WW2 and they blamed it on bumpy jeeps. I promise my jeep didn't cause this though

thanks jcf. I'm just curious if anyone is dealing with it here. I want to learn the tricks and what they've done.

nobody really knows what causes it. a theory is severe or repetitive trama to the tailbone brings it about, so soldiers figured the jeeps did it since the ride rough. I'm pretty sure mine's more of a poor posture thing. I slouch a bit when in a chair, putting weight on that bone. I don't know, this is the first time it's ever bothered me.

EDIT: yeah the dr told me to take 3-4 sitz baths per day. it releaves pain, but 10 mins after getting out you're a walking nightmare again.

yeah for a full on removal. lancing from what I understand gets rid of it, but the cyst stays dormant then returns later. the operation I guess bores out a cavity and eliminates the roots and all infected tissue. it's more of a perminate fix.

yeah I missed alot of work from a pimple on my a** it just looks like one, but feels like someone fired a .45 up it. I'm generally pretty pain tolerate. I've broken alot of bones, cut wisdom teeth, had my thumb nearly sawed off...take it from me, this dumb thing has me on my knees

Never hadit GH, but I have injured back/tail bone in some competition results

You might try to improve your backs "posture" and get one of those seat "doughnuts" that are used for anal operations, modify it and set it higher to take the vertical load off your tailbone

Anyway, I'm sorry for ya--I hope you can whupit

Check with the doc and see if an ice pack in the "doughnut" hole will help in dulling and reducing the virus action !!

Good luck

My friend once had a thing called a Fistula which sounds similar to your torture. He had it lanced and it was quite painful.

I have seen those huge bloody things like a boil they lance them & pack them with cotton strips doused in antibiotic or antiseptic solution. Then they pull it out & change it every so often, blah there goes my lunch

what exactly is "lancing"?

the pimple part of it I already cut open and drained with a little pocket knife. I have, I don't know what you'd call it, like a swollen, raised enflamed area all around where the absess was. when I push on it it feels like it's full of fluid or something, and I can feel pressure in that area.

my doctor called back and he said he'd have to look at it. but from what he's saying it should drain out on it's on in a week, or it can be "helped" by applying pressure to different areas. sooner or later I'm going to start playing around with it I think. this isn't the first "bullet in mouth, bottle of whiskey" thing I've ever done, but I'll grab another knife and towels and figure something out. no I'm not posting any pics, I've done enough grossing people out when my cat clawed through my finger nail and shredded me no more gore. I'll update later to fill yinz in what happened.

so nobody is dealing with this thing? I don't know how common it is but a search pulled all kinds of data and stories. I've never heard of it till Saturday. it looks kind of common. all the stories though speak of repeat flare ups without surgery. that's the main thing I want cleared up. I certainly don't want to experience this again.

that was also my first migrain headache. what a hoot those things are. it was like an electric current being blasted through my left side of my head every 15 seconds or so, making me dizzy and nauseous. I feel bad if someone reading this gets them regularly. I didn't think I was going to live 48 roughly of that crap, and from what I hear mine wasn't too bad. folks hallucinate, and get sensitive to light and sound...I experienced none of that. a little light, but I was ok with tv light or daylight with curtains shut.

I think I'd take this cyst thing over that headache. that was really intense. I still get "zapped" now and again, but it's very mild.

i used to get migraines, and lancing is just poking the boil, puss pocket or what not and getting the goo out and it relieves the pain and pressure but you have to be careful it doesnt get more infected, had two of those bad boys in basic and they were staf infection and yeah the army does not believe in pain meds for that kind of stuff was cool to see the stuff tho ha ha but then I am weird that way

Lancing is pretty much cutting it open and draining it.

I am a medical transcriptionist and work with many surgeons, and have almost 20 years with them treating me as if they are paying me to be a nurse, including going into the rooms to assist. Here is the basic stuff you need to know.

A pilonidal cyst is nothing to be alarmed about from an "oh my god, am I going to die" perspective. Just extremely painful and gross to discuss. You can have it lanced (in a surgeon's office while awake) and they leave it open to drain and give pain meds and antibiotics. Problem TEMPORARILY solved.

But the reason to "cut it out" is to eliminate the source. They "tract" through sinuses and get deeper the more often they reoccur. Once that sinus tract is eliminated, it will not reoccur. I would suggest having it drained to tide you over until you can take a longer period of time to recover. Donut hole pillows may help sitting on the couch or in a comfy luxury car, but a Jeep ride is going to be impossibly miserable until it heals--one way or the other.

Not fun. But don't be embarrassed to go to see a general surgeon. They deal with these every single day and don't think a thing about it. It is probably the simplest thing you could possibly hope for. You can even just tell them what it is when you make the appointment. No need to tell the secretary where. :>

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't have it/haven't had it. but I've seen it (both in the ER, and in a cpl friends)

it sucks.(see secondary infection below)

Some people require surgery, some in theory do not (both of my friends did).

All I can say is good luck, and follow doctors orders.
Abcesses need to be drained and packed. hope you have insurance, as the best way IMO to get rid of this issue is to have daily wound care.

If you have a wound care center in your area they will be the best at getting you taken care of....and ensuring no secondary infections occur....as the often do when things aren't done right.

A healthy diet is the best thing you can do to speed up the healing process IMO.

NOTE- this is not medical advice, consider it friend advice. I'm a nurse, but I don't want to get sued.

I second the words above - don't be embarrassed...In the Medical field, we see much more embarrassing things than this.

just noticed your question regarding lancing...as you suspected lancing is a fancy word for stabbing it with a knife (which I don't suggest you do to yourself ever again - see secondary infection above )

good luck with it. Its just common enough for there to be quite a few doc's with experiences with it...so this is a good thing for you. If you opt for Sx my single piece of advice is to goto the largest city near you (not sure where you are from...but bigger city almost always = better surgery experience)

alright, good information everyone. I had a good experience with my cat scratch thread, so I figured I'd post another med thread

ok so I suppose I lanced it myself then. that sac disappeared, and I was draining out a little bit. well I was going to dig around like I said earlier, so I laid down and relaxed a little beforehand. but when I got up I noticed something weird....no pain? so I walked around the house a little. this usually causes drainage to start, and pain follows. well, nothing. I just felt pressure. so my girlfriend is like "I'm going to Sheetz to get lunch, what do you want?" and I said "a hotdog...nevermind I'm going to." I've discovered a car ride is the WORST thing to do based off my experience driving to the ER last Saturday. so long story short, no pain, but I needed a change of clothes and a bottle of upholstry cleaner.

it's not like the drainage I've read about though. mine has no smell to it, and it looks like water with a hint of blood mixed in, almost like a very light oil or coffee when on a white napkin. anyway, other than alot of pressure still, I feel good.

here tosh, I don't know if you saw my other med thread, but it has a little gore for ya not for the squeemish

harwa...it is a jeep illness. I guess it used to be called jeep disease

ok, so you medical folks, I can expect this again in the future? I do have insurance, what's a ballpark estimate on what to expect? and do I need to wait for it to return if surgery is needed, or can it be done anytime?

this is why you should ask ANYTHING on this forum. i did have one thread that got deleted, but i was ignorant as to what it was. y'all that posted in it know which one im talking about. doctors never really gave me a good answer, and they don't share personal experiences and thoughts. you guys/gals are a great help. thank you.

I had one of those in Vietnam and it was about the size of a tennis ball too. I ended up taking care of it myself but it was pretty gross and the amount of gunk that came out shocked me. It came back about six months later but much smaller & I took care of that one too. 40 years later, it never came back after that much smaller second one.

I'm told they happen from a combination of perspiration and a lot of chaffing which I had a lot of that going on in Vietnam. They were pretty common there from what I learned later while finally figuring out the name of what that thing was.
