Talking Anyone Here Scuba Dive?

Just curious if there are any other scuba divers here. If so, please share some videos of your diving trips, whether in the US or abroad!

Last August my fiance and I went to Bonaire for a week of diving. She had been there in the past, but this was my first time. This was also my first time ever leaving the US. I had a brilliant time. We went to Buddy Dive in Bonaire. What a beautiful country, from north to south. I highly recommend it for anyone who has not been!

These are just a few of the vids I took. I apologize for any shaky video.

I'm using a GoPro Hero2 HD with the GoPro Dive housing, red filter, and shot in 720 HD with 60 FPS.

Sea turtles - two vids of these magnificent creatures...

Boca Slagbaai:

Windsock:

Octopus - two vids as well of these guys:

Night diving - inking us - I guess we were too close?

Daytime off of Buddy Reef:

The Hilma Hooker - 2 vids:

Two moray eels:

Last and BEST in my opinion. We went to the national park on the north end of the island for a cookout. The site is known as Boca Slagbaai. Great little bar with bar food, pink flamingos abound, and so much more. BEAUTIFUL location. Anyway, long story short... This was my last dive of the day. We hopped out into the water and headed north into the current. The current changed and REALLY started to suck us off of the reef. We kept our calm and were able to stay close. I saw this crazy cloud of bait fish.. known as a "bait ball" I was told. I swam toward it and hovered, taking video. The bait fish began to lift as Tarpon started to swim through. What an incredible sight - I can't believe what I saw and was able to record on video. It was such a fun, entertaining and incredible time. The video is here:

I have quite a few photos as well, but I'll share those over in the Pictures section of the forum.

Advanced open water and EAN certs here. I was in Curacao...just west of Bonaire...about 1 1/2 years ago. Was great because all these great dive sites were beach accessible which is what I've heard Bonaire is like. If you liked Bonair, I'd highly recommend you check out Cozumel next. It's an even shorter flight from the US, the island is widely regarded as the safest place to be in Mexico...virtually no violent crime whatsoever. And the reef is indescribable. Kinda like seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time will take the words out of your mouth...Cozumel is like that.
Sorry, no pics of my dives. I was too busy looking with my own 2 eyes to waste time with a camera.

That sounds beautiful! Bonaire definitely rocks 'cause of the shore diving access, plus all the dive spots around Klein Bonaire. I have heard the diving in both Curacao and Cozumel are amazing. Our next trip is going to be either the Dry Tortugas (off the Keys), Turks and Caicos, or Belize (She has been a few times and loves it there). Cozumel is definitely on the list! Our dive shop went this year, but we had plans that week. Have you dove in the states at all? Off the OBX for example?

Told ya you'd like Bonaire. I saw your vids over on JF last year and still think they're great. You're vids are why I got my GoPro.

Klein Bonaire is a great place to see life. We've seen seahorses, squid, octopi, and LOTS of turtles. Occasionally, if you dive the western edge of it, you can see migratory whales, but those are fairly rare.

PADI Rescue Diver certified here.

You were correct! lol. We only saw two turtles on the whole trip, I was a bit let down by that. I think in total we only did 4 Klein Bonaire dives through the week. Whales would have been such a cool experience to see! I figured since I haven't posted the vids and photos here that I should share them. I want to see other diving videos and photos from fellow Jeepers, though!

How are you liking your GoPro rig? I'm debating getting a real setup soon. The videos on the GoPro rock, but the photos aren't up to par in terms of what I really want at least.

I just got my Open Water cert last month in Cozumel. It was a great time, especially once I figured out I need to take prilosec prior to diving. I swallow too much air when I equalize! haha

I think Cozumel is a great place for beginners, because the drift diving made it easier for me to concentrate on bouyancy. Of course, it helped that after I was done with the cert that I had a more experienced diver to help guide me around.

I did have a camera person following me around on my final OWC dive, so I purchased them. Here are some of the pictures:

You can see the whole album here... if you're curious: Scuba Diving OWC Dive #3 and #4

I think we're considering doing a Key Largo trip next. Has anyone gone there? Any recommendations?

I haven't dived off the US Coast....I'm sure there are places where the visibility is decent, but most places I've been aren't all that great compared to the Caribbean dive meccas. I used to live in NC, spent tons of time in the OBX. Just seemed not clear enough.
There is a really good chance I'll be moving to far northern California to a town right on the coast. If so, I'll definitely try out some cold water dives in the kelp forests.
I've heard lots of good info on Belize and the Keyes. A friend down the street from me grew up on a dive boat out there...his dad had a dive shop in Key Largo back in the 60s and 70s. He had lots of good things to say. There are some ships that have been scuttled intentionally out there and are great wreck dives.

My dad had a dive shop when I was a kid. My first cert was SSI's Jr Open Water Diver when I was 12. I acquired several more over the years, and even worked part-time as a safety diver in my early 20's. I quit diving for years, but just moved to SW Florida so it's just a matter of time before I wander into a dive shop...

There are some nice wrecks you can dive around (can't go in w/o wreck certs) in the Keys. Got a Caribbean influence in the water, so vis should be a lot better than along the east Coast.

We dove the Oriskany off Pensacola after they sank her in 2006. We really want to dive her again and see how things have progressed. We just haven't gotten back down there to do it.

My wife, son, and me on the Oriskany...

I like the rig! I've been using it more on my triathlon and endurance bike rides, but I'm happy with it so far. I did use it on our cruise this past spring, but only for snorkeling (the dive was cancelled due to poor vis and choppy seas BOO). Happy with its performance for video, but haven't really tried it for photos yet. We've had such a busy spring, we haven't had time to go diving.

Great photos!

Paul, that's great you're getting some good use out of it. Let me post up my photos so you can see what the quality is, of my Hero 2 at least, with a red filter, in a GoPro Dive Housing... 56K kill here:

We dove: Buddy Reef, Windsock, Hilma Hooker, Boca Slagbaai, Sharon's Serenity, Keepsake, Carl's Hill, etc.

Most of these are the underwater ones and most were the GoPro. The VERY blue/green ones were an old SeaLife camera (From which I stole my mount and handles). I can post above ground shots if anyone wants to see what Bonaire looks like as well.

Frogfish:

Sea snake:

Nice photos, Rick! Good pics of the octopi. They're hard to get a good shot of unless you're really ready.

Paul, that makes me miss Bonaire even more. I NEED to get back there. I miss diving, haven't gone since Bonaire, not even to Dutch Springs (Our local 30' vis Limestone Quarry).

My wife and I may be going back there in November. Still seeing if I can swing it work-wise. Just going up to the TN aquarium this weekend and seeing all the fish made us want to go diving.
