Beaver Alert!

We have beavers! 15 miles west of Chicago in a heavily commercialized area (Woodfield Mall) with subdivisions all around.

I noticed a rather large branch balanced on my back fence & thought the wind from the last storm dropped it there. This happens quite ofter during heavy winds because the trees around the house are all 40+ years old. We are lucky because the branch is right on the post & not on the wood fencing.

I went out this weekend to cut it down & get it off the post & noticed that the end looked like it had been cut. I went to the other side of the fence, by the creek, and saw that the end was cut like a cone with multiple facets like a diamond. BEAVERS I thought, or at least some kids with a hatchet having some fun. I looked around and saw a number of trees that had been felled by our furry little friends. They must be mad because out of the 5 trees the felled, only 1 hit the ground. The others are suspended by neighboring trees or power lines.

I'll post the pictures later but who'da thunk there'd be beavers just miles away from Chi-town? I guess I shouldn't be too surprised because we're only a few miles away from one of the largest forest preserves in the area. But still, who else has beavers in their backyard?

Beavers are great. One of my favorites. Some are big and some are small, some are furry and some aren't AS furry. The beavers you need to look out for and avoid are the rabid ones. You know, the ones that are frothing at the mouth and have a putrid smell to them. Stay away from those beavers.

Why, I haven't a clue what you're talking about..........I was just educating people to stay away from the rabid, smelly beavers. What did you think I was talking about?

This is the quote of the day.

I think you should drop this quote randomly into threads when they go off-topic.

Do not attempt to pet the beaver if its teeth are showing.Sometimes its best to sneak up upon the beaver and pet it and wait for a reaction. There will be times,if you try to pet the beaver,it will react before contact.Depends on its mood. Some beavers are very friendly, but I would suggest keeping a distance from them as they are possibly up to something. Its usually best to pet the same beaver you know well as not to cause conflict in the beaver community.Beavers can be very emotional and can be irritated rather quickly if not handled properly.

All BS aside, the critters are losing their fear of humans, searching for food or better water supply.Alot of folks will kill beavers because of the destructive behavior,so they move to where there isn't a threat to the breeding grounds. If a critter starts seeing their homies dead on a trap line, eventually they will move to a safer environment.Enjoy the nature while you can!

I know that area well. I am not surprised at all that you have beavers there. Taking a look across the highway from Woodfield and there is a pretty major nature area with water etc. and that whole part of the county has wetlands all over - all the way out past Barrington etc.
Even here on the northwest side of Downtown, I see fox, deer, coyotes and we even had that mountain lion that wandered in from the Antioch area a while ago.
It's what happens when urban sprawl encroaches on nature.

Now all we need in this part of town is one of those parakeet families living up on the electrical system

Anybody else wanna post their beaver pictures? I will try again tonight to post our beaver damage photos.

Our insurance company hung up on me yesterday when I asked them if our homeowner policy covered beaver damage. I had to call them back & explain that these cute, furry critters are cutting down all our trees & causing damage to the fences and such.
