In extreme weather locations they just call it a bag. For most people it's just being prepared for bad things that may happen. You will need what military guys call snivel gear. (Weather appropriate stuff for your neck of the woods) Then you pack for what you are likely to face. Weight is critical and can't be overlooked. First aid, water, high calorie meal replacement, fire starter, weapons, flashlight, batteries, small radio, etc... You choose what you need. 25lbs to 35 max. You will need a really good backpack!
storing this away for latenight reading. Gonna have to build me one of these. already have a decent start as I keep all my survival gear in one bag to take in and out of my Jeep for wheeling trips. I dont leave it in there cause it has my 8" survival knife, finger saw, hatchet, hammer and some other not so police friendly stuff that could get me in serious truoble if I were ever pulled over.
Random Guy: "Is there anywhere that thing cant go?"
Me: "Yea, past a gas station..."
I have one for each member of my family and three for myself. One of mine is in my Jeep, One is at my office and the other is at home with the ones for my family.
All together, we have enough to survive for over two weeks and it can all be carried by the four of us if necessary.
I also carry a full EMT kit, satellite phone, and a few other things with me wherever I go. You really never can tell when your going to need some of these things. I have helped several people out of pretty bad situations by having these basics with me.
I suggest to all my friends to put together a bag (or bags).
