I bought my tow rig in Missouri. Paid with a check for the asking price. Since I was out of state they couldn't charge me tax. I had to pay that when I got home. In this situation it is best to call the current state DMV office. They are the authority and you won't get any he said she said crap.

Well it's different for each state, but generally all you have to do is have it inspected. If you buy it from a dealership there is tax issues that will be different. Best suggestion is to get online with the Motor Vehicle dept. in your state or give them a call.

If you buy a vehicle out of state and are planning on having it registered in your state all you have to do is pay sales tax in the registering state. You may have to pay some fees at the dealer (if you're buying it from a dealer) like inventory tax, their inspection fees etc. Those shouldn't amount to too much though. What you will need to do is pay the sales tax and get the vehicle registered as soon as you return home. Most state tax agencies will penalize you if it's not registered within a few days. They'll issue your plates and registration once all the fees are paid.

Also if you plan on financing it with the buyer (a dealer) the bank may not accept the contract until all the tax and fees are paid. Cash is easier and financing makes it much more complicated.

If you're unsure of what your local tax rate is you can look it up online.
