Buying ammo,well trying to.

Whats up with this?? Luckily I have prob a thousand rounds but I was looking to get ahold of more soon, since Ill be using up some & theres none in stock,it seems anywhere.I heard something about fed agencies buying a billion rounds? Is that something they have been doing but nobody noticed until the shortage or is it the reason there is a shortage.
I guess if they dont ban our guns they will somehow manage to make buying ammo impossible.Hopefully this too will pass.

Government agencies have always contracted out to ammo manufacturers, but the buying of consumer rounds is just urban myth. There would be no purpose for it unless they were worried about civil unrest and trying to limit the supplies of the revolt. Too many gun lovers out there than load their own and too many ammo manufacturers that are grass roots and anti-government control.

Make your own from used shells and cartridges.

Just supply and demand. A lot of gun enthusiasts are trying to buy what they can before the laws become more restrictive. I drove by a local gun show Saturday and the line to get in must have been 200 yards long

Right now, there are several gun-related bills awaiting our govenor's signature. Some are reasonable, others aren't. You're lucky to have 1000 rounds

A friend of mine who teaches at the police academy here said that .223 rounds are going to end up being like Cuban cigars. Semi-illegal, hard to come by and very valuable

A guy I work with told me academy sports has "black friday" three times a week. They get 3 ammo shipments each week and the days the ammo comes in theres a line of people waiting for the doors to open that morning to get in and buy ammo.

Nice!

Hopefully you'll be able to sell ammunition privately without big brother's approval

Supply and demand thanks to the feds. For some unknown reason homeland security is buying millions of rounds of ammo and getting tanks. That's HOMELAND security.

I really don't get the point of hoarding ammo. I have probably a 1000rds of 7.62 and sure I would love to buy more. But buy more to actually target shot and pest control. Nope can't do that because all these paranoid people think what ever they think(take your guns and ammo, outrageous taxes, whatever). What do you possibly need 10000rds for? Be honest, this isn't the movies and your house is not gonna be a resistance fortress. Sure you can make money off it. You will not see me paying out the arse for ammo though. Ill hold tight until the dust settles and we have a new president. Look what happened when Clinton left office. We got assault "style" rifles back.

Why do I need 10,000 rounds of .223/5.56?
I reload. I get all the brass I want at the Highway Patrol range where I teach our local LEOs the art of mid and long range shooting.
Read my signature...then go look up what the Army ASI B4 means. I do a lot of shooting. Is that a sufficient answer? I'm not the one buying out WalMart. I RELOAD.
I stock up on reloading components quarterly and reload like a madman all the while putting roughly 10,000+ rounds downrange yearly. Sometimes significantly more than that, seldom less.

Competition guys.. At least .22 ones will shoot 500 rounds or more a week. I know I use to. Sporting clay shooters 300 or more rounds a week easy. 10,000 rounds don't last all that long

Not bent outta shape. You asked why we could possibly need 10,000+ rounds and I gave you my reason.

The number one reason I can think to have 10,000 or more rounds of any ammo is the same reason I can think of owning gold. Pure investment. Just hope I am smart enough to unload before it tanks. there are guys paying a buck a round for 5.56 and 7.62 daaham that is some return. Oh and you forget King BO is going to win a 3rd term it is all about history, what do we need a two term limit for when we can make history and have a 3 termer LOL.

FDR was a 4-termer from 1932-1945 (he died in his 4th term), so they wouldn't be making history wth a 3rd term. They WOULD make history with a 5th term though, and it wouldn't surprise me if they tried to give it a go...lol...

Both WalMart & Dick's Sporting Goods were OUT of handgun ammo this weekend.. I still go to the range almost every week, but I take one pistol and use one box of ammo. I have about 500 rounds of each type of ammo for my handguns. I can buy ammo at the range, but they are also limiting to one box per day per gun. I thought maybe it would be a little better by now but it's worse!

Bass Pro Shop also has a little (very little) on their shelves. The people who can, are reloading. I don't have that capability right now. So being a little more frugal with what I have helps, a little.

If .223 ammo will get that much more scarce, I should conserve that too, & buy what I see I guess. Gun show coming up in April. At Chantilly in February, the event people said it was the largest crowd they had ever had there. Nuts!

I'm not sure there are a lot of people actually hoarding ammunition, but if thousands of gun owners who may normally have, say two or three boxes of ammo at home, simply double that in anticipation of jacked-up prices, you end up with a lot of empty shelves

Yes, I have some friends who own guns, and probably half are hoarding not only ammo but buying up more guns. You should see the lines at the gun show ammo vendors! OMGOSH!!! And the reload vendors have become really popular! Last time I had to walk around the crush of people trying to buy reload materials.

I think this has spooked a lot of people. I am not easily spooked, but this is a concern.

While it sucks that ammo and components are becoming scarce, it warms my heart to know the American people are arming themselves at a rate previously unknown to our history. We will not go quietly, that's for sure! I hope we're sending a message (loud and clear) to our Gov't. There IS civil unrest. The Gov't is walking a tight line right now.

I guess if they dont ban our guns they will somehow manage to make buying ammo impossible.Hopefully this too will pass.
As mentioned, cycles of filling government contracts leads to shortages for civilian supplies - this is nothing new. Before, it used to be just the military with large contracts, but now you also have the DHS needing to stockpile ammo for it's own supplies - not only reserve ammo for SHTF/terrorism situations, but ammo for target practice and training. So now the production lines have shifted towards filling those government contracts because these big money making contracts take priority over civilian sales. In order to fill those contracts by their deadlines, the production lines get shifted. There are physical limitations as to how much and how fast ammo can be produced and only so much equipment, and only so much parts supplies available at any given time.

Anytime there is talk of new restrictive gun laws you get panic buyers of guns and ammo. Compound shift in production to filling government contracts with civilians panic buying ammo and reloading supplies, and what you get is empty retail shelves because civilian demand outpaces the civilian supply rate.

Once these large contracts have been filled, production will shift back to supplying civilians. Ammo companies want to make as much money as possible, whenever possible.

I concur. Today I actually became a felon. When our govenor signed the bill to limit mag capacity to 15, the half dozen or so 30 round mags I have upstairs put me on the wrong side of the law.

I don't consider the people in line at the gun shows to be hoarders. That connotates something wrong with them. The amount of ammo you have, and the number of guns is a relative number, and certainly none of anyone's business.
