College

So I'm a freshman at U. of TN-Knoxville. Anybody have any suggestions how to keep my head above the water in my classes?

What about everybody else? where did you go? best memory?
should be interesting...

IF your paying for it yourself, great, don't let your investment in yourself go to waste.

IF someone else is paying for it, great, show them that you are worth the investment.

I went to three colleges so I'm not qualified to give advice as to keeping one's head above the water.

Most universities have a "how to study" course, which sounds like eye-rolling BS and really isn't. Very few students graduate from high school actually understanding how to study, and particularly how to study efficiently.

In general, the advice is to always keep up - don't let something slide because you are tired or bored or want to do something more fun. As you start to get behind in something, it gets harder and harder. Also, make sure you have a mix of classes - every quarter or semester you should have at least one class that you took because it was either really fun or really interesting.

My degrees are in literature (B.S.), engineering (B.S.), anthropology (B.S.) and geology (B.S., M.S., Ph.D.) - it took 3 passes through college and about 20 years to earn the above, but I always enjoyed learning and classes, even though I thought the last go was going to bankrupt me.

I'm in my last semester of a degree completion program program at Azusa Pacific University. The best advice I can give you is to finish school now while you are young and someone else is paying for it. Trying to finish your degree while you work a full-time job to support your family is a major pain.

I have a BFA in Ceramics and Printmaking, funny since I now write. The three colleges were because I screwed around and was tossed from two. Heed the words here from the crew. Experience is the best teacher, but a little forewarning is nice to have.

The advice I wish I'd had before I started college? That's easy. Be very honest with yourself when you're making up your schedule. If you're not an early riser, don't believe you will get up for an 8 in the morning class. Be realistic, it's better to take one less class than to fail two.

It's ok to have fun, but don't forget why you're there. I'd rather have my MFA than the two failed years of drinking and debauchery. By the time I was finished my BFA I couldn't accept the scholarship to Alfred because the obligations of life had kicked in.

And remember college is about finding your path. People change as do majors. Take your core classes so that when you do change lanes, the classes still count toward your new degree, but don't ever be afraid to take an odd class that interests you. You never know, it may lead to a whole new career path.

In the fall, you want afternoon classes so you can go hunting in the mornings.

In the spring, you want morning classes so you can go fishing in the afternoons.

Pretty simple.

College is what you make of it. I had a great deal of fun in class once I quit the crap and started to realize why I was there. I plan on heading back soon. Thinking about botany this time.

Yes, I write. Keeps the voices quiet.

(Dare, that's actually perfect without the fishing and hunting considering cold fall mornings and lovely spring days)

my advice is this: don't do what i did. i was impatient, and liked making money working full time. i thought i didn't have time to finish school. it seems like it will take forever, but when you get a little older, even later 20's, a few years is nothing. i also partied too much, stay away from the booze and drugs. its real easy to get into if you're living on campus, or away from home.

i wish someone put it to me this way: college is like paying dues, to get ahead you have to pay your dues. whether you think you need it or not, just do it. i was never explained that, and in my mind i didn't need school. i've done very well with some college but no degree, but not many people can.

keep your head on and focus for a few years, the time will fly. good luck

college is supposedly the best four years of your life, and a great time to get some good life experiences in, but don't let it ruin you, like jpdocdave said don't party all the time, but, my school is about 10 miniutes from my house, so i live at home but still stagger in every now and then in the wee hours of the morn.

but listen up, makin a quick dollar bill isn't worth it, i though working full time was what i wanted, took a job right out of high school and makin decent money at that. but then i realized that it isn't all its cracked up to be, a wanting of more professional career and just a thirst for knowledge got me back. its hard coming off of a full time job, i had good money and lots of toys that i had to sell to get back in, it even ruined (partially) my near marriage! all i have to say is if you can't keep your scholarships then take out student loans, don't hesitate jsut do it.

good luck

and remember.. not much of this

College Grads make an average of $30,000+ more a year than non college grads.
Now that's a brand new Rubicon.
Case closed.

Yeah I like that Dare. Yeah the money is def. gonna be alot nicer once I'm out. The biggest thing is budgeting time and money. During the summer I had tons of both but now the are both scarce. Never been real big on the pot yj so I think I'm good except maybe contact from the guys across the hall lol.

Did 2 yrs at NCSU. Transferred to UNC, went part time , and got married. My wife finished her 1 st degree that semester and I encouraged her to go back into her original major of pharmacy. I worked the next 2&1/2 yrs while she finished. She then paid for me to go back to school. I went 1 yr and changed my accounting major to pharmacy. 2 & 1/2 more yrs and I finally graduated. Which was good since our first child was due in 4 months!

My point is study hard, keep you mind open to new ideas, and by all means have the mindset that the degree is a must. Not an option but a must have situation. It can be done but you have to believe in yourself first and then use what help others can offer second.

And DO YOUR WORK EARLY. Don't let deadlines creep up on you.

Now get off line and do some work

x2 on the mom comment. She might be a complete biotch some times but if she really loves you she will always be there. Its cool being out of the house but dorms arent the greatest... Lastnight for instance I had to a bunch of guys SCREAMING not yelling but screaming about UT getting there ass handed to them. Kinda disturbing when you are trying to sleep...
