Just Googled. Looks like was between $1.50-2.00/gallon.
So that's about lowest I've ever seen.

Seventeen-year-old Fred DeLuca founded Subway in 1965 with financial aid from Dr. Peter Buck, a nuclear physicist. DeLuca was searching for a way to raise enough money for college tuition; in the process, he created a restaurant called Pete's Super Submarines, which operated in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Brian Dixon, an acquaintance of DeLuca, opened the first franchised Subway store in Wallingford, Connecticut, in 1974.

The Panama canal is 110 feet wide. The USS Missouri is 108 feet wide. Thus you end up with this.

The one way toll charge for a large container ship using the Panama Canal can be $250,000.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike could take lessons.

The larva of the tsetse fly excretes a powerful toxin through pores in its skin. A single drop is potent enough to kill a human.

The "dark" side of the moon is not visible from earth because it rotates at the same rate it revolves around the earth.

The "dark" side of the moon isn't always dark. Most easily imagined by visualizing a solar eclipse. Though the back side of the moon is lit by the sun quite regularly.

Right?

Since ships often carry over 2000 containers, shipping companies pass this cost on to customers. If you ship through the canal you might pay fees of $125 per container

The abbreviation "ORD" for Chicago's O'Hare airport comes from the original name Orchard Field. O'Hare Airport was named in honor of Lieutenant Commander Edward H. "Butch" O'Hare.

The picture of the USS Missouri crossing the canal was taken in 1945.

The Panama Canal originated as a French project, but after 10 years of workers dying from maleria, they left. The US stepped in some 20 years later, and a decade later it was ready (1914). The US retained control for quite some time, but got heavy resistance after WWII for occupying Panamanian soil, primarily after the Suez Canal was repatriotized by the Egyptian Govt (away from the imperialists France & Britian). Tensions ran high enough for the US to fence in the Canal Zone, restricting Panamanian access to Panamanian soil and water, which led to more protests, some with fatalities of Panamanians and US Service members. Jimmy Carter, in Sept. 1977, signed a treaty returning the canal to the Panamanian govt, but not for another 35 years, 3 months, and 3 weeks - it was to take effect before the year 2000. We gave it back with 12 hours to spare.

We had our very own Panama Canal for about 86 years.

ORD is not really an abbreviation, it is the airports IATA code. They are a unique three letter code (usually) used to identify airports worldwide. While developed by the airline industry they are also given to ports in general. Chicago has two major airports, O’Hare – ORD, Midway – MDW, and the city itself as a port – CHI. New York gets four – JFK, LGA, EWR, NYC. Philadelphia only uses one - PHL
