The escalator was first invented as an amusement part ride.

In the pioneer days, the symbol for currency was 'US' - the "S" was placed directly over the "U" and in time, we got lazy and instead of "US" overlapping, we shortened the "U" into today's "S" with two lines through it.

Ew indeed!

I figured it'd be a few more, though, to be honest.

The first president of the US to ride in an automobile? President William Mckinley.
The first automobile to be ridden in by a US president? Stanley Steamer.

President Mckinley was also the president who 'liberated' Cuba, P.R., Guam, and the Phillipines from Spanish rule, sending the famous Rough Riders, with future president and national park creator Teddy Roosevelt, to win the Spanish American war.
He signed the Gold-Standard act, opting for gold backed paper over silver and gold coins. This laid the groundwork for the creation of the Fed, and some 34 years later we lost the gold standard, leading to magic money dominated by a cartel of anonymous private individuals.
Despite having grown American Imperialism greatly, he came down hard against the mil-ind complex after Congressional reports emerged about how the wars and occupations were conducted.
He was elected a second term, under the theme 'The Full Dinner Pail', a running theme of his presidency and his efforts to reverse the bust cycle he inherited. His opponent William Bryan, who had run on a coinage campaign 4 years earlier, ran on an anti-imperalist campaign this time.
He was shot twice while in a receiving line at the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition. He died 8 days after from the wounds.
