Dogs

I haven't had one in 12 years or at least since I moved out on my own and am looking into getting one. I see lots of jeeps with pure breeds sitting in them so my question is whats the best way to get a pure breed? My family way back had an issue(s) with a dog farm/breeder, so I am a little leery of that. I prefer a mutt for health concerns but there are a few pure breeds the have my interest.

First we chose the breed we wanted. My wife joined a forum (like this) for that breed. We researched the breed & breeders that were within driving distance. We contacted several breeders via email. We actually found a breeder we were comfortable with 45 mins from home. We exchanged emails several times. We chose from several pups she had and got one of the best dogs we have ever had. Just take your time, do some research and meet with the breeder.

Rescue is definitely a great way to go, even for pure breeds. If you have a particular breed in mind most all have national and/or local rescue organizations. Their websites are a great way to research the breed to make sure that it's a good match for your situation and lifestyle. There is also petfinder.com for searching local shelters for particular breeds near you. Good luck.

SailorMac's answer is right.
Every time you buy from a breeder, a shelter dog dies. Definitely not the way to go.

Good looking basset there.

I was looking at petfinder for research at least for a mutts, didn't or at least didn't notice many pure breeds.

Craig's list and find someone who can't keep their pet. Or a shelter otherwise. I prefer rescuing over paying a breeder for a pure bred. Not that anal about breeds, although I do like short hair dogs.
