DTV - totally worth it!!!

So lately i've been hearing lots of stuff about Digital TV (DTV). So today i was looking for an antenna for my tv (no need for cable since i never really watch it and i rather spend the extra on my TJ). I ended up purchasing a DTV converter box and all i can say is WOW. I thought it would be just an antenna with no improvement but i was wrong. It's an entire new unit. You simply plug your old antenna into the unit and then this unit controls your channels instead of the TV. You simply turn your tv on to ch 3 or the video input..aka RCAs.. (whatever you chose) and then switch the chs with the DTV converter box. It comes with a remote so its very similar to cable or satellite. Picture is improved greatly (no fuzzes or anything), you also have a guide so you can see what is playing with information about it, you can look around to see whats playing later, etc etc. You get few more chs in addition to what you get with out the box and also there are few (3-4) true HD channels. Basically it's like having "free" mini cable.

Anyhow the box i got was $49.9x. Call this number 1-888-388-2009 to get a 40 bucks off coupon or visit them at their website https://www.dtv2009.gov/. They offer up to 2 coupons and i'd highly recommend getting both of them because once you try it you will want to get all you can get (2 coupons max per house).

The reason why i'm writing this is i could not find any info on the net if it improves quality or anything like that so i tried it and am now sharing my experience.

I got my box from Walmart.

I bought two of them a few weeks ago - still in the boxes. I guess I'll hook em up!

It doesn't improve the quality or resolution... it's just that the old signals(analog) have been converted to digital and thus the need for the converter box... just like with *gasp* digital cable. It's becoming the new basic standard for all televisions. You won't find a TV at any store that isn't "cable ready" or doesn't have a converter built in.

Do yourself a favor and buy a nice/decent LCD tv with a digital QAM tuner and then you will hate that new little $50 box you bought.

Az i have a 52" wide screen tv and i'd like to keep it. The quality is the second thing it improved and reception being the 1st. Before even on the best reception channels the graphics would still be crappy. No its not the tv because DVDs have great graphics. Now its almost as good as a dvd.

anywho, hey trip. we're in the same area, how many channels do you get? i'm thinking of ditching digital cable. but i love watching mythbusters, and that stuff. discovery, history, and learning channel are all i watch, and the kids watch disney every now and then. so all i watch is cable, but i pay for 100 channels, and watch 4.

and ice road truckers is comin up again

Is it an HDtv or just a giant projection? How old is it? What do you mean by graphics? The picture quality may look better, but it's just smoother due to the digital signal. There was no increase in resolution... your still running at 480i.

lol. nope no discovery or history but today i checked them out.

i love the science ch but not one of those either.

You get ch 5 and also there is ch 5.2 which is only the weather

you get ch 7 and then same with the weather again 7.2

ch 9 wgn i think then 9.2 wgn hd or something

ch 11.1 wttw, 11.2 then wttw hd then 11.3 wttw sd then 11.4 is wttw dt
there was wttw kids somewhere too just dont remember it

next is ch 20 standard.. then 20.2 is ch 20 hd, then ch 20.3 is another ch.

ch 26.1 is the U. Then 26.2 is me tv, 26.3 is another me tv ch 26.6 is some fbt ch

32.1 is fox

38.1 is regular 38, 38.2 is quito or something, 38.3 is ION, 38.4 is some "worship" ch "W"

44.1 is that mexican ch. No idea the name of it

then ch 50.. standard "my 50"

ch 60 is that other mexican ch with the triangle and the circle in there

then ch 62... standard 62...

then ch 66... again another mexican ch..

And i know i'm missing at least one other ch but thats what i can remember.

Although they are same chanels such as the wttw, hd vs sd vs etc.. they are NOT the same shows. They are different chs so dont get it confuse as one ch being over and over because its not.

for example there are 2 me tv stations. they are both playing different movies.

Az, its not an HD tv. By graphics i mean before the chs would seem blurry and more pixelated on spots. Now all that is gone, you cant see pixels any more.
