Economic Stimulus Package

Can you say $1200 to spend on the Jeep?

Well, okay $600 for the jeep, $600 for a sofa, or something girly.

9 trillion in debt, Lets give tax "rebates" to people that don't pay taxes. brilliant.

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can exist only until the voters discover they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that democracy always collapses over a loose fiscal policy, always to be followed by a dictatorship."

$1500 for me, but somehow I don't think I'll see any of it. A new washer and dryer mysteriously appeared on my jeep build list.

"free money" from the government that you will have to take into account when you file in 2009. Doesn't sound like a fair deal considering we have to eventually claim it and take chunk out of our future tax rebates. Like the Roman saying ' just give the people circuses and bread' all to keep us complacent. Just making my point not enemies.

I don't think you can give it back. The best thing you can do is spend it. I am a little young to know if it will work, but supposedly the idea is to spend the cash. Apparently people are hearing "recession" and saving money/pulling money from stock etc. and its just making the situation worse. I guess the idea is, if they are given "free" money, we will all spend it, and jump start the economy.

All I know, is my Jeep my finally get rid of these MTRs and might even get a little lift!

Not sure how true it is, but I heard that if you make over a certain amount, you will not be eligible. Besides, the people who will recieve this so called "refund" will probably be the ones who already have WIC, medicade, food stamps, and Heap paying for their heat and electric or they'll hand it over to the illegals. This country sucks anymore. Thanks Bush.

Lower income folks who don't make enough to pay taxes will get 300. Single folks who make up to 75,000 will get 600. Married folks who make up to 110,000 (I think) get 1200 plus 300 per child they claim. Single with over 75k and married over 110k get nothing. At least that's they way I understand it. And it is due in June if it gets to the pres for signature.

Don't blame this on Bush. While I consider him an abysmal failure fiscally, he didn't really have a choice.
This was a vote buy planned by the democrats, they expected Bush to fight them on it to get his tax cuts made permanent which would have made the republicans look like big money grubbing meanies and swayed the upcoming elections to their side.
This will do nothing but cause a small blip in the economy because businessmen with any intelligence will realize that it's a one shot deal. The only way for something like this to work would be for the government to send checks every month. Then businesses would ramp up production, hire new workers and possibly even expand, that's what boosts economy.
The better solution would be to make the current tax cuts permanent or even cut corporate tax even more, then business could plan for the future and maybe even have a little extra to reinvest in thier business which would create jobs and boost wages.
Right now, one of the biggest reasons the economy is slowing is because businessmen see the democrats taking over and they've all promised big corporate tax increases which will make it much harder to be profitable doing business in America.
We have the second highest corporate tax rate in the world. And people wonder why our jobs are fleeing the country.

Skeeter, that's pretty insightful, especially for a "Shortbus window licker"!

its not going to do much to boos the economy since most people will just use it to help pay off loans and what not.

Paying off debt does help the economy. Having too much debt makes less spendable income. Not spending money is a cause of a recession albeit not the whole cause.

The first 2 stimulus packages Bush and Congress sent out did help the economy. Car sales went up right after the check went out..I think that was 2001 or 2002.

everything is is bad need of help right now. i work for a subcontractor on houses, and the building industry just stopped right now. spending cash is the key to keeping the economy going strong. if people start getting scared to spend and money stops circulating the economy will get much worse. this is the reason for the stimulus package. i'm not saying giving the money doesnt help, but it doesnt help nearly as much in practice as it does in theory. true, using it to pay off debt/loans will free up some spendable income, in some cases, but not all. for the majortiy, it will just bring them closer to being out of the hole. and they wont go out and spend that same ammount somewhere else.
i dont think its all bush's fault, as you can not blame the entire economy on one single person. there's lots of other factors. illegal immigration is a big one, in that it takes jobs away from hard working tax paying americans. and gives them to non-tax paying illegals. this increases the unepmployment levels, takes money away from many american families, and takes away from the government in 2 ways, first, the illegals arent paying taxes where as the americans were, and the illegals still get medical treatment, education, and other services provided for by taxes that they arent paying.
Another contributor was the fed pushing banks to give loans to people who they knew were risks to not be able to pay, and the banks giving out adjustable interest rates on loans. when the rates rose to levels people couldnt afford, that strapped many people for money and took more cash out of circulation and in many cases forced banks to forclose on homes. this also effected many banks and loan companies that have now gone bankrupt bc they have lent out way more money than has been paid back.
theres several other issues that are effecting this slumping economy but its not really necessary to outline them. but a big one is nothing new, but the amount of tax money spent on prisoners is ridiculous and could be well spent else where.
sorry for getting off topic, if we need to start another thread for all this please do so.

Little Rock did their part to stimulate the economy this weekend.

The wifey and I went down to celebrate my birthday Saturday night. Between the Big Buck Classic at the fairgrounds, and the Monster Truck Show at Alltel arena, there must have been 40,000 rednecks in town!!!
Every restaurant was packed to the gills, Gander Mountain was busy like it was Christmas, and there was evidence that Realtree, Advantage, and Mossy Oak has been selling a lot of camo clothing.

I should be getting a bit of money back from taxes, and then at least $300 from this "stimulus package". All of which will go towards bills.

Don't we all realize this stimulus isn't free money? It'll all be sent back to the foreign countries that we get our goods, gas, and credit cards from. Suadi Arabia is the major stock holders of citi bank. Wouldn't it be easier if there was no income tax at all; with the only tax you pay is on gas, vices, clothing, and what ever taxes your state in imposes such as sale tax. I'm not saying I won't accept the money as father of two, but it will all go right back out of this country. I would love to finally put the money into my yj, but it just isn't economical. just making my point not enemies.

True.
Get Ron Paul to ease off on his foreign policy lunacy and
I'd vote for him.

BTW, quit worrying about making enemies. nobody is going to hate you for your choice in candidate around here.
