education fail...

Today, I went to my youngest's "promotion" from elementary school. At the end, after honor roll and president's awards (Mouse is sure now he's getting an "Obamacorn"), they were all given a little gift basket.

In it was a bookmark with inspirational writing on it. As I was looking at it, I noticed something less than inspiring.

"Remember to be courageous as you fallow your dreams."

It's a little disheartening to be told to leave your dreams, or your fields, fallow.

Spellcheck is making the collective stupider.

Along similar lines, I witness this every night on the local news. It drives me up the frigg'n wall. How hard is it to check spelling and grammar? How hard is to speak correct english? How hard is it to know (at least) your local geography?

Tiny, we are living in So Cal. Maybe it is a form of Spanglish and that is how the spelling is determined.

Jeff

p.s. It is sad that something like that got by. No one at the printers or the school took the effort to check something that goes to each kid? Now I want an Obamacorn. Maybe I can feed it "hey"

This is what we are creating at public school. Progressive brainwashing is more important than education. I'm putting my daughters in a charter school next year. I'm tired of all the money at her school being spend to teach ESL and cultural diversity. How about we teach math, English, Science and history instead. I gave up on most teachers last year. After going back to finish my BA last year I saw that all the biggest morons in my classes were education majors. My brother and sister are teachers and have become discouraged at the system. Thank goodness for community college.

Back to the original post.

From now on dreams will be issued to students by the government based on socio-economic and diversity needs. As you are a loving parent, who cares about your child, provides for her by engaging in employment, encourages her to be successful, and mearly by the color of her skin it is easy to tell that you are already weathy, your child has enough "dreams" already. Therefore, 50% of your child's dreams will be witheld and issued to the child of a "crack head", and not one of those wealthy, silver spoon, white crackheads either.

This has been a message of the Obama Broadcasting System (OBS).

Yes.. back to the orginal... I have a 16 year old and a 11 year old.... The oldest is in the public school system, which can not be described politely here, the youngest in a private school.... berofe you hitme for not having both in private school, the oldest couldn't pass the entrance exam for grade level, and it wouldn't necessarily be fair to push her back 2 grades to catch up..... the other day she (the oldest) brought home a paper that she got an "A" on and when reading it, atleast every 4th word was mispelled and english that would make a gang-banger cringe in anguish.... When discussing with the teacher her comment was that "we grade for trying".... well then we should give Captian Hazelwood an "A" in ship docking....

On top of that we have become too dependent on these damn machines to tell us how much change to give in return, how to spell, where&when to turn and so on....

My kids think I am the meanest for not allowing a calculator for math homework. I did offer my old sliderule, but they declined....

My youngest, who received the bookmark, just promoted from 5th to 6th grade. He's reading at an 11th grade level and he's in public school. He tested well above grade level in math and is doing well in science. He's also quite an entertaining writer. Blame can't be shoved on public school with a broad sweeping hand.

But the ability to spell, punctuate, and use proper grammar along with simply being able to communicate through written word is becoming a lost art.

Could you put that in texting format, where we can all understand it?

I think I'm the only person who actually texts in full sentences with punctuation. Even my father has fallen into the "r", "ur", and such. I can't do it. It bothers me.

And Unlimited.... I've seen that same thing written all over town. Sad because it's far too common.

My daughter is briliant; getting A's in Geometry, biology, Spanish and all her other classes as a freshman. I graduated from the same school district she is now in. I don't want her to get the same bad high school education I got. I could have never gone to college if it wasn't for community college. I'm sending her to a charter school next year that a family friend's child is already attending. Each child gets an account. That means they aren't spending my kids' share on some other kid who is a moron. As a junior she will be able to start classes at the community college, which is across the street from the charter school, and get credit for both schools. Many of the kids get an AS degree at the same time as they graduate high school. She wants to be a vet, so I want her to have every advantage. The best part is that is cost nothing. The statistics at charter schools, prove traditional schools in most areas are broken and that the problem can be fixed by a different way of thinking.

Nah.... that's just the colloquial spelling. It's reserved for those of us that are authorized to use "big words".

I don't have any problems with spelling, punctuation or grammar in general.

I just DON'T text. I get one and call back and do things via voice.

Perhaps I'm just fallow.

I was thinking more like "gray" as in old.

But Yellowish isn't out of the question after a long weekend of really hard drinking...

And quit saying "colour". It's not colloquial unless you're British or something.

Sorry, can't help it. I lived in England for two years. Went to school there when I was young and impressionable. There are a few things that I still use the English spelling on. Colour is one of them.
