Emergency kit ideas/Survival tips

Here are the Items that we carry and use in our survival training, the first set of following Items are Items that I (being ground team leader) require my team to have on person, this is deemed our 24 hr gear. This can be put in to a back pack or like the web gear that I carry.

Water (can be in canteen or camelpak, in a jeep you could just keep a gallon jug)
Pen
Small notebook
Reflective orange vest
Compass
Poncho
Pocket knife (multi-tool is preferred)
Large trash bag (black leaf bag preferred for the toughness)
Signal mirror
Whistle
Matches in waterproof container
(*hint* Dip your match heads into melted wax and that will waterproof you matches)
50’ of nylon line
4-5’ of duct tape (wrap on a pen or pencil for connivance, you don’t need a whole roll)
Flashlight
Insect repellant
Sunscreen
Lip balm
TOILET PAPER
1 Meal (not just snacks MRE work the best)
First aid kit with following, (can be in small travel bag or a Ziploc bag)
(mind you this is mainly for personal use, because I have a Medic kit with more advanced stuff for my team, you can add to this for more people and maybe a few other things that you might use at home for first aid)
6 bandaids (various sizes)
2-3 antibiotic ointment
mole skin (small sheet)
2 Roll gauze
4-8 gauze pads (various sizes)
1 triangular bandage w/ safety pins
Silk tape
1 pair of latex or equivalent gloves

The follow items are ones that I would recommend (still for the day pack) to my team but they are not required, they are a good idea to have though.

Change of sock
Work gloves
Flagging tape (orange or yellow)
Spare flashlight (pen light works)
More toilet paper
Moist towelettes
Area maps

The following items are in what we call our 72 hr pack, all things in here are optional, and what it is taken to a base camp like area and is used to replenish the day pack, and all the items above are taken to day trips to where ever we go. I have this in the large Alice pack shown in the picture.

Tent
Sleeping bag (everything need with sleeping)
5 meals
change of cloths ( including underwear and a couple of sock)
area road, topo, and sat maps ( have protractors, rulers, grid readers, lensatic compass)
sewing kit
spare shoe laces
nylon webbing 1” x 10-20’
FM transceiver
Water purification tablets
Eye protection
Entrenching tool
Toiletry kit
Tooth brush
Tooth paste
Deodorant
Soaps
Towel

All the items there is what we use on a Search and rescue mission, the list can be modified as you see fit but the upper most items I would strongly recommend for a small pack, the lower lists are good to have but are not absolutely have to have. All the items on the very top list I can get everything from Wal-Mart for $50 or less, If you start going in to the other equipment then expect to pay more, my entire setup that I have to date has cost me about $250 but a good portion of that is what I am carrying all this in and my camelbak. On my team no guns are allowed!!!!! That’s not to say Its not a good idea to have, but just keep in mind the more ammo you have the more you have to carry should the absolute worst happen, but that goes for every thing. The more you pack the more you carry!!!!

NOTE: I will try to get better pics of all the items that I carry and how I carry them. Just be patient because I don’t have a digital camera and I do have school and work full time!!!

I think Skeeter and Mswilder agreed it deserved it's own thread.

Don't feel bad, Scout, the only reason I have any idea what's going on is, I live with one of em.

The other thread seems to be devolving and mswilder has some great info to share, I thought it would be safer on it's own.

A Question

Debruins sent me a PM asking me about what to carry, well I thought this would be a good thing to post so that everybody can see. I am trying to get some survial tips typed up but I just havent had the time that i wanted to work on them. but hopefully soon i can get some more. if any one else has a question you can PM me or post here and I can try to answer it.

this is the replied to message.

Im not in a city or rural, its in between, aka suburbia, but im also 16 and dont feel comfortable going up to someone and asking for help, or waiting by the side of the road for someone to stop and help. Food is not an issue though, it more like do i need water, or a blanket (Mass.) , or just my hi lift and a tire iron? (btw hi lift and tire iron i already have, but thats all right now)

and thats all, at least all i can remember

but thats just whne we go offraoding in the CJ
ok also rain coat tops and bottoms, sweatshirts, and cell phones, and fishing gear (thats usually why we go offroad), a 2X2 piece of 2 in thick plywood, rope, tow strap

but i cant get all that stuff in my other jeep, the Tj has a sub and a back seat!

and this is for DD im worried about, i know i can carry even more now that ill have two jeeps!, and ill have less chance of being stuck with two jeeps

there i think thats all!!!

thanx for doing all this too!

So let me see when you go out you take both jeeps? if so thats good. First to put in both is a first aid kit, you can get as simple or as complex as you so desire, at walmart for about $9-11 in the hunting/camping area there is a small red first aid kit I like that one an i have one but it is not water proof either put it in a bag or get the bigger one at WM its like $18-24 and its in a hard case, but is by the first aid stuff in heath/beauty. Keep this under a seat, in the glove box, center console it dosent matter but you need one for each vehicle. Next take some of that duct tape in the CJ and put some of it on a pen of pencil and keep it in you glove box of your TJ, just about 5-10 feet. Get a flashlight in there whether you take one out of the CJ or get another just get one, the small well by the seat is a great place to put it if its not to small. Being up north I would but a small blanket in your TJ, dosnt matter what kind, a space blanket would be good, $1 at wm, again under the seat or if it’s a big one on top or beside the sub in the back. Also take a small jacket, fold it up with your blanket and put it in the back or if it can fold small enough then the little place between the rear roll bar and the tub in the back is a great place to put things. Another thing is get 2-3 black trash bags, If you want you can but your blanket and jacket in one to keep the water tight, but these can be used for ANYTHING: eg, poncho, shelter, hold items, catch water, light jacket to hold body heat, the list goes on. Another nice add on would be well I call it paracord or 550 cord but I don’t know what the civilian name would be, I think the nylon cord maybe. Just get about 50 ft it rolls up pretty small, put it under a seat or the back roll bar pocket I talked about. This is all I can think of the this point but I have to run. I see if I cant think of anything else.

Sorry never thought of that well my name Matthew Scott Wilder, MSwilder for short. and until now I have not made the connection Ms. so thanks for clarifying.

None the less, I am a NREMT-B (National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Basic), in nursing school and my job right now is actually an ER tech at St. Eds Hospital in fort smith AR, I also am a firefighter/first responder/search and recovery diver for a fire department, as well as a volunteer for Crawford County Search and Rescue team, working on getting SARTECH II (search and rescue technology level 2) and ADSAR (advanced search and rescue) though NASAR (the National Search and Rescue Organization), I am also a 2nd Lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol in which I am a ground team leader/Medic with Ground team member 2 qualifications, with 2 missions shy of my Ground team member 1. It is here in the Ground team training that we learn survival tips and tricks, one of my goals is to go to the national encampment, Hawk Mountain and PJOC (Para rescue School) which are survival camps that are taught by actual survivalists and Special Forces members. I think that is most of what I do in a nutshell. Also BTW for those how dont know I am only 21 Y/O. But these are things I have come to know and love. I do what I love, and Love what I do, for time is of the essence and for most people in distress time is not a luxury so there must be people with the time, training and dedication to be able to help those in need. So that’s what I do, I answer the call for those in need anytime anywhere.
