Thanks for stepping up, and good luck to you. I'm not in the military myself, but it surrounds me via family and friends. My cousin got back from his second tour about a month ago. I've contemplated enlisting many times but haven't brought myself to do it yet. Stay safe.

This is imperative. If you have a sucking chest wound, apply occlusive dressing, take motrin, drink water.

All the above is great advice. You are well spoken/written, and should not have a hard time understanding the mind-games that are going to be played with you while you are there.

The only thing I can offer up that is that you should definitely strive to be and GRADUATE as the guide. Be aggressive and deliberate in everything you do at boot camp. You are going to take the majority of the thrashings on the quarter deck for the platoon's mistakes, but if you handle it with the understanding that you are there to lead them, it isn't that bad. Furthermore, you can be meritoriously promoted.

Also once you are graduated and at your MOS school, don't be that guy wearing USMC shirts and a backpack out in town on liberty. You make yourself a target for saltier Marines and scammers alike. Your high fade and tan lines are going to give it away as it is.

I am proud of you and make sure to be the best at whatever it is you decide to do in the Corps. Hard times are upon the military now, and you must do better than everyone else to ensure promotions and career longevity.

Also, DO NOT GET MARRIED until you get out of the Corps.

*Always raise your hand when asked for volunteers
*Find a Jodi and don't use protection
*Fall in love as soon as you can
*Get a USMC tattoo BEFORE boot
*Cut your hair in a buzz before you go
*Tell your DI that he is too short, skinny, white, black, weak, girly, pretty (whichever applies) to tell you what to do
*Don't bother running or prepping for PT, you walk everywhere
*Mention that the Navy is better, but USMC is the only branch that would take you
*Any chance you get, skip, or sham out of doing your part
*Smuggle candy and cigs in to the other guys to make some bucks
*Drinking water is for the weak
*Treat yourself to a fatcake from the chowhall (make sure you are seen my DI's doing so
*Tell Di's you don't need to goto the range, you're a mechanic
*Dont bother reading your handbook, it doesn't apply to you

I could go on and on, but this is enough to get your started on the right path.

Just a little 'Friendly' advise from a Army Combat Vet

GL man

Don't do anything in the above post lol. Also let your family know only send letters. Recruits who get packages with fatty treats get hazed.

Start drinking 2 gallons of water a day I promise when you get there your gonna wish you got use to consuming a lot of water. Especially since they will make you and that first time you have to piss like a race horse but can't use the head, you will be wishing you did.

Remember you will only be in a short time no matter what I emphasize this, do not leave the the Marines with anything but a honorable discharge. It will be something that follows you your entire life and there are no mulligans.

You are about to join a fraternal brother hood whose deeds in thousands of years will be the stories of legend.
