Evolution of Education

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried.

Why do I tell you this?

Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

1. Teaching Math In 1950 s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.

His cost of production is 4/5 of the price.

What is his profit?

2. Teaching Math In 1960s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.

His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80.

What is his profit?

3. Teaching Math In 1970s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.

His cost of production is $80.

Did he make a profit?

4. Teaching Math In 1980s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.

His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20.

Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

5. Teaching Math In 1990s

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is

selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the

habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands.

He does this so he can make a profit of $20.

What do you think of this way of making a living?

Topic for class participation after answering the question:

How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut

down their homes? (There are no wrong answers.)

6. Teaching Math In 2007

Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100.

El costo de la producciones es $80.

Cuanto dinero ha hecho?

The giving change thing is only a symptom of being raised on computers. BEWARE if the computer goes down the business usually crashes with it.
Students today have so much information available at their fingertips that they do not have to do any analytical thinking.

My daughter is in the 4th grade. They are allowed to use calculators for their math! They are supposed to be learning the times tables but it's ok for them to use calculators! We've talked to her teacher about this and he knows that we don't want her to use a calculator. As far as we can tell, he's honoring our wishes. He doesn't like the way math is taught either but, if he wants to teach, he's bound by what the state and school board say.
It's no wonder our young people can't do basic math. They're not taught it anymore!

I eat free at Sonic A LOT! Sometimes they even PAY ME to eat there! I love watching the blood in their poor little brains boil as they try to do the math in their head.

They are all too busy text messaging each other at work to learn how to give proper service.

Okay, I had a good one today...

College girl that works for me asked another employee what time it was. She was standing 10 feet from a 12" wall clock. The other employee says, "You are standing right in front of a clock." The girl says, "Yeah but I don't read that kind of clock, I look on the computer screen and read the one with the numbers."

There's still hope.
Every time I get to feeling we're lost I look at my daughters homework and remember I wasn't doing algebra in the 4th grade.
She went to a regional math competition last night where she was doing math in her head that I would have trouble doing on a calculator. There were several hundred 4th graders at this event doing the same thing.

Remember when you were in school, there were idiots, normal kids, and kids who just naturally excelled.
the idiots won't learn no matter what you try and teach em, they are the ones you encounter working the register at the local choke n puke or the stop n rob.
The normal kids could learn and if pushed could learn well but they had the attitude of why bother, they just skated along and now they're your mechanics, salesmen, truck drivers and middle management. then you have those kids who naturally excelled, they wanted to learn, it was fun for them, those kids are now scientists, doctors, lawyers and upper management, people we don't interact with on a daily basis unless we also move in those circles so we tend to forget that they're there.

Algebra in the 4th grade. Thats pretty good, we started algebra freshman year of high school. But we still were not allowed to use calculators. I think the first time I was allowed to use a calculator was in physics.
