Finally.....

Finally.....the weather calmed down enough to get in some trigger time this afternoon. I went to my own personal range (0-1200m) today for the first time in WEEKS. It's been blowing a gale here in North Central Kansas for the past month, as well as raining off and on.

My range was too muddy for my truck past the 600m mark, so I had to settle for that distance today. My rifle is zeroed at 600m, so it's kind of a no-brainer other than windage. Wind was down to 10-15mph gusts from my 2 o'clock, so it was a relatively easy windage estimation. I'm used to firing in gusts up to 30+ knots.

Here's the results. I didn't take any pics of the softballs (my favorite targets), but here's the target.....

looks like fun. makes me wish i took pics of my target yesterday. granted that was at 5 yards with a .45. granted as some one who was trained by the military to do this type of thing, you could out shoot me with a blind fold on.
but putting 112 shots into one little target is fun...

what were you shooting?

Larry is the only one who's seen it. I won't post pics here on the forum since they have to go through a photo-sharing site first. The world doesn't need to know what kind of firepower I have in the safes........

Dude, did you just ask me out on a date?

Jk......you'd like my range. I've got targets set up from 50m (handgun) to 1200m. Pick your poison!!

I can set up targets in closer range for reflexive firing. I'm trying to figure out a contraption for making some moving targets. I don't want to clutter up the range too badly though. I like it clean and orderly, so a moving target bank may be too much.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it is relatively prone to low-level flooding. It sits at the foot of a ridge and gets a fair amount of runoff. A drainage solution is in the works.

Making a moving target is easy (just send somebody out and tell them to run lol) you just need a track system then that is it.

I sure did hot thing.

If your .308 is anything like my old one was built to be...I know you can shoot farther than that. All I have as rifles now is my plinker SKS and my 7mil

I am jealous. I miss sending rounds down range. Especially long range. Looking to build the collection soon. Would be nice to have that sort of range here locally. I have to wait till we go out to the Az. house for that.
Iron sites or scope?

I was kicking around the idea of using a garage-door opener for the motorized/track system of a moving target base. It would work fine for close-proximity work, but when out of range of the remote it wouldn't work. Unless anyone knows of a remote amplifier for garage door opener remotes?

Or move the sencor closer to you with wire. or wire it all the way to you and just flip the switch. But 1200m of wire is alot.

Oh yeah. 600m is cake for this rifle. I'm a dead shot at 1200m with it. I don't have a range that's any longer than 1200m right now, so until I do, that's the limit of the rifle. (But I know, from military experience, that a .308 round still has enough retained velocity to secure an insurgent heartbeat past 1200m!! )

Scope. No iron sights on this rifle.

I thought about that, but was a little put off by the 1200m of wire!

I could always put the moving targets somewhere in-between range. Something to think about.

I'm about to move to Salina, about 60 miles from where I'm at now. I'll be going to flight school for the next 4 years there in Salina. Unfortunately, I'll have to settle for coming back and shooting on the occasional weekend.

Our Government is paying the entire bill, so I'm going to fly EVERY SINGLE aircraft that K-State has. Everything from the Cessna 172 trainers to the Citation jet, including the Schweizer helicopter. I'll get rated on them all.

I know of a few ways to get that to work. BTW 1200m of wire is not that bad in price. Since you are going to use landscape wire looms (1000 foot for 60 bucks or so they come in 4 and 5 wire runs)

You get the parts I will make a road trip out to set it up for ya. So long as your not at one side of the range and I am working at the other lol. Don't want to here on the radio OOOPPS did that hurt lol

You'll have to let me know when you're on your way through. Maybe we can all get together and have a beer or nine.
