Finding Mom a new (to her) vehicle

My mom, who turns 60 in November, is pretty active. My dad passed away eight years ago, and my mom still lives in the big house, works full-time, takes care of my grandmother, goes out with friends, etc.

In short, she's not sitting around doing nothing.

My mom has a 2003 Ford Taurus - plain Jane gray. She bought it a few months after my dad was gone, and it's starting to cost money to keep running. I've tried to explain the pros/cons of the money she's put into it, but she hasn't wanted to start searching...

... until now.

Now, I know this is a Jeep Wrangler forum, but my mom is not a Wrangler-type. She's been a co-pilot with me a few times, but the high-rise to get in isn't a favorite of hers, and she wants/needs something with four doors.

So, I'm just looking for suggestions of cars that you guys would consider for your moms.

It shouldn't be brand new (too much money), but shouldn't be more than five-seven years old. Prior to her Taurus my parents had a Jimmy, which they really enjoyed. I think she would like something in the 4WD area, but not a tank... so a mid-size SUV, of sorts. As I mentioned, she lives alone, and we do get our share of ice and snow during the winter. I try to clean the drive as I can, but I can't do it in the mornings... so she needs something that gets out a long drive. Also, my mom goes to see my sister in Iowa 4-6x a year (an 8-9 hour drive), so that comes into play as well.

So, with all those comments... any suggestions? Any "Do Not Buy" thoughts?

You guys are awesome... thanks for any insight!

If it were my Mom, I think I would try to find a low mileage Subi Forrester wagon. Tough little cars, well equipped, great on fuel, and all time 4 wheel. Just my opinion.

How about a Jeep Liberty? Mom has one and she is 72. No climbing to get into. 4x4 Four doors. Gets decent gas milage. Cargo area. It's not so big that it isn't easy to manuver in traffic.

I've thought about the Jeep Liberty before... I wondered if they were built well for the "long haul" over time.

My grandmother has a Cherokee (my grandfather passed about about 18 months ago, and she doesn't drive... but it gets driven 2-3x a week when her friends/family come and take her out). My mom likes it, but the Cherokee likes to stop at virtually every gas station.

The Ford Flex... I know nothing about. Are they good in winter weather?

the flex has fwd and goes to awd when it needs to. my mom has the same system in her taurus and it works better than i thought but still not as good as selectable 4wd. plus there's no low range. the ground clearance doesn't look to good on it. as long as your mom isn't going down an unplowed dirt road with 2 ft of snow (which i highly doubt) then i think the flex is a decent mom car. it's probably newer and more expensive than you were looking for though.

Bumping this thread up, as the search is now on. The Taurus needs to be sold... so I'm planning to spend a little time this weekend searching for a car for my mom.

Found a 2010 Liberty Sport that might be an option.

Continued opinions would be appreciated...

We have a 2008 Liberty that has been great. I would highly recommend one!

we bought a 2010 jeep patriot 2.4, it is a nice little suv that my wife drives, she is getting 38 to 40 mpg,s and its easy to get in and out of..all the seats lay down flat for easy hauling of stuff,..we bought it new for around 20,000 and you can find them cheaper than that...--

we just put this one up for sale for 16,500 so we can get her a new mustang g.t.

My mom has become interested in a Toyota Matrix. It's like a station wagon/SUV combo. Found a decent one about 50 miles away... Red and all the trimmings, and inner price range.

Anyone have knowledge about the Matrix (and not the red pill/blue pill type). ;-)

Ya. Have heard good things about them. My sister has an '02 Pontiac vibe...same difference...and has driven across Canada 4 or 5 times. Has a ton of km's on it...I think around 300,000...

Personally I would go Subaru imprezza as that's the second vehicle in our house and it's great. We live in northern Alberta and have seen a few winters with it and no problems yet.

Or get a wrangler and lower it down a bit. jk
