I've been looking at Mossberg, but Remington, too. Hard to decide.
Like has been said you could flip a coin and be happy with either one. Both are used in the military/LE. I personally like the safety location on the Mossberg better than the Remington. I went with this model because it came exactly like I wanted it right out of the box and no extra tacticool stuff I didn't want. I like to keep my guns as simple as I can. And iirc the a1 model has less plastic parts than the non a1 models and a heavier duty barrel.

Oh btw...do NOT buy Remington 00 buck shot. I'll never buy it again. The white crud they pack in there leaks out of the shell like a salt shaker. It was so bad it even made my spring in the tube not want to extend all the way there was so much of it in there.

If you don't mind dropping the coin the Mossberg 930SPX is an excellent home defense shotgun for the money. Autoloader, light, well made. I sold a Benelli M4 and bought the 930SPX. Couldn't be happier.

I've read a couple bad reviews on the Mossberg 930PX, such as:

Biggest POS Shotgun I've Ever Fired..The Mossberg 930 SPX -

While it seems like a nice shotgun, I just can't place my confidence in it. If it's for home defense, the gun has to work. My family's life is on the line.

So, I think I'll probably get a FN SLP MK I or SLP Tactical shotgun in about half a year. Anyone have personal experience with either?

I've never shot one but I wouldn't put too much weight into a few online reviews. Hell you could find a couple bad reviews about anything including my 590a1 or Jeep Wranglers. And I bet you can find 10x more positive reviews for all of them. If it's what you want go for it.

I picked my 930SPX up in June 2011. Have since put probably 1000 rounds through it without a single problem. For all we know the guy in that post didn't clean and lube it before taking it out. Maybe he dropped it in the dirt or sand and the actions was all boogered up. Too many variable. I wouldn't even call what he wrote a review. More like a rant. And not many HD auto-loaders handle birdshot well. Even the Benelli M4 I sold didn't like birdshot. Doesn't make it a bad shotgun.

If you get a chance go shoot one. Everyone I know with one loves it.

Doubt i'd buy one. No need for it really. I got the pump for home defense and the only other shotgun I want to add to my collection is an O/U for clay pigeons. Been leaning towards a Ruger Red Label.

I did get to do some shooting today though

A friend of mine has the right approach when reading negative reviews online:
"When you have a good experience you might tell a few people about it. When you have a bad experience you tell EVERYONE about it."

Yeah that's very true. Would have been more accurate for me to say "10x more happy customers with no complaints."

Here's a couple of my favorites, first up is a rare HK P7M8 in factory nickel finish, only 200-250 of these made.

Jeeps and guns . I have a Smith & Wesson 60 Ladysmith, a Smith & Wesson 642 for my CCW, a Mossberg 500 shotgun I use mostly for trap but am just getting into hunting, and a new Savage Arms 22 bolt-action rifle. I just got voted into a gun club (only the 6th female member). And, yep, I shoot like a girl

My new toy; fired it for the first time today.

I also have 2 Mossberg 500's and a Henry Big Boy lever rifle chambered in .45 Colt.

Our family dog gave gave my wife and me this for Christmas. It's our first firearm in over 29 years of marriage. We took it to the range a few days ago. The sights seem to be a little off when my wife is shooting but she says she'll work on it.

Look into a "regular" Mossberg 500 or Remington 870.

I keep a Mossberg 500 at both my houses. No "tactical" crap or pistol grip, just a plain ole simple pump-action shotgun with a 18.5" barrel (and a longer one for skeet shooting or turkey hunting.) Simpler is better.

I've fed hundreds of shells through both with no trouble as long as I stick to good quality ammo and keep them clean. That means high-brass Remington buckshot and slugs, Breneke slugs, or Winchester AA birdshot for skeet (not home defense.)

I did experience FTE problems with low brass/no brass shells like Winchester Super X and avoid those like the plague.

I keep Winchester PDX1 buck-and-ball as my home defense load, backed by a substantial stash of Remington 1-buck and 00-buck in case I have to deal with hordes of looters or zombies. I do fire boxes of each of my home defense loads several times a year to make sure they feed well and to maintain muscle memory.

How'd do like the S&W? My wife is about to get her CCW permit and wants a revolver. (and she also wants a bolt-action rifle...)

You must have had a bad batch. I've practiced with box after box of that stuff with no trouble.

I LOVE both my S&W revolvers. I carry the 642 for my ccw and love it. Lots of people don't like it for the recoil but i shoot pretty well with it. I changed out grips on both mine and found that helped. My female friend bought a 642 without ever having shot it and hates it. I always recommend women rent a bunch of different guns at a range and pick what works. Good luck!!
