Flu pandemic possible.

U.S. Declares Public Health Emergency in Wake of Swine Flu
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said 25 percent of the stockpile for the swine flu anti-viral medication has been released as the U.S. declares a public health emergency.

This doesn't look good.
We just got over the flu and it really kicked our butts.

The bugs are probably our biggest threat. I had a pneumonia about 15 years ago and I’ve never been 100% again.

CHF a buy on Monday morning?

From the AP:

"No vaccine specifically protects against swine flu, and it is unclear how much protection current human flu vaccines might offer."

This morning on the news, they were saying that people coming home from Cancun were never notified about it when they were there. One woman got a text message from a friend asking if she was ok, that is how she found out about it.

there have been 20 cases reported in the US, and only 1 of which has been hospitalized. there are 1600 cases in mexico and 103 people have died. but, what most people fail to realize is that the health care system and the living conditions in mexico are far different then those in the US. also the "swine flu" is not contracted from eating pork products, you can catch it from handling infected pigs and contact w/ an infected person. this is a matter that needs to be closely monitored, but people do not need to panic that will only make things worse. this situation reminds me of the SARS outbreak. people freaked out and made a huge ordeal, and idk about any of you guys but i did not get SARS and neither did anyone i knew. i am not avocating throwing caution to the wind and start licking pigs and mexicans, but just don't panic. ftw, symptoms of swine flu are similar to the regular flu (coughing, sneezing, body aches, excessively tired, sore throat, fever, nausea....). the main sympton that would differentiat between the regular flu and swine flu is a high fever that will not break (and the urge to eat out of a trougth and roll in shit...j/k about those 2). also keep in mind that it is allergy season so your sore throat, sneezing, coughing, and tiredness may be due to that. be cautious but not paniced.

you're welcome, it doesn't happen too often w/ me .

unfortunately, in order for the media to keep people tuned in they need to overemphasize things like this so people keep the channel on or keep buying the papers. the more of a frenzy they cause the better it is for their business. could you imagine if i used tactics like this in my business. "Swine Flu sweeps the nation! Could you be at risk?!?!? Buy a mortar mixer for more details!!" My grandfather had the news on yesterday and they were talking about how at a high school in NYC 100 students were absent b/c of possible symptoms of swine flu. first of all they neglected to mention how many students attend this high school. if there is a student body of 5,000 kids and 100 of them miss school then that is a normal freakin day. if there are 800 kids at the school and 100 of them are absent that is a big deal. also, this is a high school, i'd be willing to bet that many of the 100 students were faking to get a day off of school, and there is another bunch of students that were forced to stay home b/c their parents were freaking out about this "massive eipdemic" (consisting of 20 reported & confirmed cases).

Swine flu has been confirmed and the school closed.

Swine flu confirmed in 8 N.Y. high school students - Washington Times

Quote:
NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City was dealing with a growing public health threat Sunday after tests confirmed that eight students at a private Catholic high school had contracted swine flu. Some of the school's students had visited Mexico on a spring break trip two weeks ago.

New York officials previously had characterized the cases as probable, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that it was swine flu, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

About 100 students at St. Francis Preparatory School in the borough of Queens complained of flulike symptoms; further tests will determine how many of those cases are swine flu.

Related articles:

Mr. Bloomberg stressed that the New York cases were mild and that many are recovering, but said parents of the students also had flu symptoms, "suggesting it is spreading person to person."

He said that the virus likely came from Mexico, although that has not officially been determined.

"We do know that some of the students from the school had a spring break in Mexico," Mr. Bloomberg said, surrounded by top city officials and members of Congress. "It is most likely to be brought back from Mexico, but nobody knows."

Federal health officials said Sunday that 20 swine flu cases have been reported so far in New York, Ohio, Kansas, Texas and California. Patients have ranged in age from 9 to over 50. At least two were hospitalized. All recovered or are recovering.

In Mexico, health officials say a strain of swine flu has killed up to 81 people and sickened more than 1,000.

Since 9-11 and SARS, the government has actively been supporting and investing in a pandemic response. There have been some major investments from uncle Sam in the vaccine business to ensure pandemic preparedness.

I know, I work at one of the facilities that makes influenza vaccines. We have a brand new facility dedicated to flu production.

Don't panic and make sure you wash your hands....
