I agree, the 7.3 turbo was the best diesel they've had yet. My dad has an 02 250 lariat with that motor. I call first dibs when he decides to sell it. Knowing him though, it'll be 2023 and 200,000+ miles at least before he upgrades. He had a 74 (before the turbos) 7.3 f-350 up until he finally decided to get the 2002. And that 6.0 (i think it was, right after they ditched the 7.3) was maybe the worst diesel ford ever made.
I also agree on older the better. Grampa had this old red 70's f-150 as long as i can remember, 351 windsor. Keep a good battery in it and fresh oil and it will never fail you. I think it would survive nuclear holocaust right along with the cockroaches. Man i wish just one automaker would make something with that kind of reliability these days. Now she leaked oil, and gas mileage was awful, but she would never leave you stranded.
Even with 200K miles, a maintained 7.3 should last another 200K. Our 99 7.3 powerstroke has a little over 220K and is still running strong. My dad also has a 93 7.3 idi (non-turbo), its not the fastest but has around 212K and still runs great. Unfortunately my dad bought an early 6.0 in 2003. That motor has had about 8 injectors replaced, a new turbo at 200 miles brand new. And lastly my dad had a 6.9 idi that he sold with over 350K on it. Ford has made great motors, but I also believe that the EPA had a hand in making motors that were built to be low emissions, not bullet proof work horses.

yeah i got my numbers mixed up with a different truck. i think it was actually 87. the boxy body style.
I had the 87 with the 6.9. It was a single cab 4x4 with 4 speed and 4.10 gears. If I remember correctly it would turn 2500 rpms at 65 mph. Top speed of about 90. Reason being it was redlined at that speed. I averaged 18 mpg city and reached 24 on the highway. My 04 cummins turns around 2000 rpms at 70 and the best I can get out of it is 16. Go figure.

Not a fan of Ford usually just from style perspective. Tho I have owned a Bronco (1994) and Bronco II (1986) and F-150 (1994). But raptor is a sweet vehicle. I am not sure why more manufactures don't do special editions. But as far as current vehicles from style perspective I prefer the GMC Sierra. I don't like Silverados or Rams. But I have a thing for the Sierra.
