FWD: NSFW! I guess Allah.......

Got this in an email today.

CAUTION!! The man pictured below does die in this video. I am not making light of it. I'm simply amazed that this technology exists.

Quote:
I guess Allah works for all... Praise Allah..!!!

This is great. Allah, akbar.
This video is made by the bad guys. The cameraman is filming his friend as he praises Allah and launches mortar shots at American troops. Little does he know that new mortar shell tracking technology can track the trajectory of a hostile round and fire a retaliatory shot to precisely the spot from which the hostile shell was fired.
This only requires the hostile mortar to fire 2 to 3 rounds. Count the number of mortar rounds the masked insurgent fires in the video. See how well it works.
Isn't technology wonderful?

I've seen that before, but never get tired of seeing it over and over and over again. I call that survival of the fittest. God is great!!!

Heart warming video.
Wasn't return fire that took him out however. Defective round.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I saw it. Do you know for sure it was a defective round? It sure looked like it to me.

I couldn't prove it in court just from the video but all the clues point to that conclusion.
Watch the previous rounds, the time it takes for the round to slide down the tube and fire matches the time from his inserting the last round and the explosion.
The explosion occurs right at the base of the mortar tube. We're good but I don't think we're that good, and I seriously doubt return fire from our side would be a single, very small explosion.

I'll always be an advocate for a single, well placed bullet..........but sometimes fate plays a role as well. In this case, it looks like this insurgent's time was simply up.....and Death found him before we could....

That was my thought, but I know little about weapons technology. However, information technology I find very interesting. I suspect the result could never be measured but wouldn’t it be great if you could reduce mortar attacks by creating a perception that you would be tracked and blown up if you fire them off.

From what I understand from friends that play with such things, we can and do track mortar trajectory in order to return fire but our response is generally an artillery barrage or air to surface missile resulting in a much larger area of destruction. The blast in that video looked to be about what you'd get from a grenade.

My father told me about one of the tricks they'd play on the VC in Vietnam. When they would find one of their munitions stashes they would steal a case of ammo, remove the powder and replace it with high explosives so when the VC soldier fired his rifle it would blow up in his face, this made the VC leery of their own supplies.

there was an article about this in american rifleman a while ago. it was a special forces project. instead of doing it to all of their ammo, they'd just do it to a few rounds, to try to get the enemy to have no faith in their weapons. it went on for a while and was effective......but a chopper full of special forces guys with the explosive ammo crashed and blew up from all the ammo, so they stopped the program around that time.
