George W's War.

Quote:
No one likes war. War is a horrific affair, bloody and expensive.
Sending our men and women into battle to perhaps die or be maimed is an
unconscionable thought.

Yet some wars need to be waged, and someone needs to lead. The
citizenry and Congress are often ambivalent or largely opposed to any
given war. It's up to our leader to convince them. That's why we call the leader "Commander in Chief."

George W.'s war was no different. There was lots of resistance to it.
Many in Congress were vehemently against the idea. The Commander in
Chief had to lobby for legislative approval.

Along with supporters, George W. used the force of his convictions, the
power of his title and every ounce of moral suasion he could muster to
rally support. He had to assure Congress and the public that the war
was morally justified, winnable and affordable. Congress eventually
came around and voted overwhelmingly to wage war.

George W. then lobbied foreign governments for support. But in the end,
only one European nation helped us. The rest of the world sat on its
hands and watched.

After a few quick victories, things started to go bad. There were many
dark days when all the news was discouraging. Casualties began to
mount.
It became obvious that our forces were too small. Congress began to
drag its feet about funding the effort.

Many who had voted to support the war just a few years earlier were
beginning to speak against it and accuse the Commander in Chief of
misleading them. Many critics began to call him incompetent, an idiot
and even a liar. Journalists joined the negative chorus with a
vengeance.

As the war entered its fourth year, the public began to grow weary of
the conflict and the casualties. George W.'s popularity plummeted. Yet
through it all, he stood firm, supporting the troops and endorsing the
struggle.

Without his unwavering support, the war would have surely ended, then
and there, in overwhelming and total defeat.

At this darkest of times, he began to make some changes. More troops
were added and trained. Some advisers were shuffled, and new generals
installed.

Then, unexpectedly and gradually, things began to improve. Now it was
the enemy that appeared to be growing weary of the lengthy conflict and
losing support. Victories began to come, and hope returned.

Many critics in Congress and the press said the improvements were just
George W.'s good luck. The progress, they said, would be temporary. He
knew, however, that in warfare good fortune counts.

Then, in the unlikeliest of circumstances and perhaps the most historic
example of military luck, the enemy blundered and was resoundingly
defeated. After six long years of war, the Commander in Chief basked in
a most hard-fought victory.

So on that historic day, Oct. 19, 1781, in a place called Yorktown , a
satisfied George Washington sat upon his beautiful white horse and
accepted the surrender of Lord Cornwallis, effectively ending the
Revolutionary War.

Good use of parallelism. I'm a believer of George W. (both of 'em!), and I trust we're over there for a reason. I know we're over there for a reason.

Though I think this is a great read, I'm left wondering if you actually wrote this or just grabbed it from somewhere, Dare?

[rant] Things posted that are not personally written by the poster should always be quoted and credit should be given where credit is due. Writers work damn hard on their words and their words are their living. The original writer may be lost, but the words should still be in quotes. [/rant]

Rant duely noted.

I did use it from another source, however the other source didn't acknowledge who wrote it, either. I felt like the people who have served / are serving on this forum would appreciate the post, so I used it.

Should I feel dirty and ashamed?

Sorry, I don't.

Searched until I found the source..."By INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY"

Never heard of him. But maybe now I can get bail.

Just because you don't know the exact source does not mean you shouldn't post it under quotes. You may not appreciate that I'm giving you hell over this, but considering that I am trying my best to make a living writing, I think posting someone else's work without at the very least quotes isn't right and makes people think it's yours when it is not.

I'm sure if you had written the piece and someone else passed it off as their own you would not appreciate it. You can be as snarky as you want about having your hand slapped, but taking credit for someone else's work sucks no matter where it is. I know you did it innocently, but ignorance is not an excuse and plagiarism is a crime on certain levels.

So, in the interest of being clear on who did or didn't write it, I'm adding quotes. If indeed you did write any part of it, let me know and I'll remove the quotes around that part of it.

Thanks for making my post politically correct to your way of thinking. If you will look at the website for the daily editorials that Investors Business Daily sends out free over the internet and actually has a link for you to pass it on to a friend, none of the articles have bylines other than Investors Business Daily. I guess the guy who really wrote it has traded a paycheck from them for his right to put his name on his work.

Thanks for taking what was supposed to be a positive thread and making your personal point about something entirely different.

If you wanted to slap my hands you could have done it by PM.

I posted a legitimate point that was not actually directed at you personally if you actually read it.

You were rude since I never once said you should be ashamed and took offense instead of merely stating that this was a share site you grabbed it from and clearly stating that in fact that you did not write the piece yourself.

You continued to be snotty in your responses because you supposed I had attacked you personally, which I had not.

You are now crying politically correct. Taking credit for other's work has nothing to do with being politically correct. Please take the time to look up the definitions of politically correct (ie "treating other people's religion, culture, etc. with sensitivity.") and plagiarism (ie "quoting from or using the work of another author in your work without acknowledging that you have done so"), the two do not cross paths. One is a way of thinking and open to debate since no two people think alike. The other is cut and dry. Words that are not written by one person should not be presented as their own. This is not a personal point of view, it is a fact.

Thanks for taking offense when none was intended.

It's a JEEP FORUM, not a writer's guild. I passed on something that I thought our members would benefit from or enjoy. You took the liberty to make a public issue out of whether or not I used quotes to give whoever wrote it credit or not to claim credit myself. You made a big sticky issue where there should have been none. Your responsibilities as a moderator do not include changing my post so as not to offend your own personal agenda. You pretty much hijacked the thread to make your point.
