I had an awesome argument with this wanna be eco-terrorist douche at work yesterday, he was going on about how the polar ice caps are going to melt and put so-cal under water. I had a field day with this idiot, but even after I completely proved him wrong he just mumbled about me being full of shit and walked out.

I did a nice demonstration to show him that water levels do NOT rise when the ice inside melts.

When an ice cube (or an iceberg, which is a big ice cube) floats in water, the weight of the ice cube is exactly equal to the weight of the displaced water.

When the ice cube melts, its volume changes, but its weight is conserved. So the melted water from the ice cube has exactly the same weight as the water that was displaced by the ice cube when it was frozen, therefore the volume of melted water fits exactly in the previously displaced volume, and the water level stays the same.

This doesn't even include the possibility of air pockets, other minerals, or what ever else might get mixed in the iceberg/ice cube. So the water levels could quite possibly go down

You may be right on the big picture, but you are arguing the wrong thing. Most of the ice isn't in the water already. There's a lot ice on top of Greenland.

Whether it will all melt is open for debate, but I don't think most people are arguing that it won't have an impact if it does. That's just math.

Quote:
If the entire 2.85 million km³ of ice were to melt, it would lead to a global sea level rise of 7.2 m (23.6 ft). This would inundate most coastal cities in the World and remove several small island countries from the face of Earth, since island nations such as Tuvalu and Maldives have a maximum altitude below or just above this number.
Tell your eco-terrorist friend to get better facts, and the two of you will have more fun debating.

Bah, I knew I should have mentioned this in the first post but I didn't want to be righting a novel on here Damn you Geoff for being a critical thinker!

Yes, there is alot of ice on land in Greenland and Antarctica as well. And I did bring this up to the eco-terrorist as a counter point. But I didn't have the numbers handy at the time to combat this arguement and I don't want to go off of my bad memory and be proven wrong

But yes, if ALL of the ice melted it would be water world for alot of people but the chances of the temperature going and staying above 32* in these areas long enough for this to happen is so slim it might as well be labeled impossible within the next however many hundreds/thousands of years.

One cool thing about the ice in these areas is that they hold an amazing record of earths climate changes, which are very very slow in terms of time that humans live by, and always fluctuating. Up, down, back up and down again over the course of millions of years. To think that humans can cause this same change in climate over a couple hundred years is insane.

What about all the catastophic volcanos and meteor strikes that have happened in the history of earth that put more "greenhouse gases" into the air in one go than we have total in our time of polluting. The earth is very good at balancing itself out, otherwise it would not be the accomidating planet we have today.

Damnit, that ended up being pretty long...

Plus lets say hypothetically if the ice melts 25%, thats alot of cold water being brought around by currents, and current temperatures have a huge effect on the climate. So by my theory, (which is largly uninformed and probably flawed as I haven't researched this) even if it somehow gets to the point where a massive 25% of the ice melts, that is going to circulate cold water all of the world and equalize the temperature.

But I think alot less than 25% would have to melt for that to happen.

Just to be clear, I think global warming/climate change is a natural cycle the earth goes through, with or without humans. At this time in the cycle, politicians and fear mongers are using it to gain power and/or money.
