You should do a search in the market for an "app killer"...it will shutdown any apps that stay on in the backround..and close any unused programs that hide in standbye mode. You can set it to kill apps at certain intervals. Mine does it every hour.
Saves a lot of battery life.

There still is a debate over the app killers. It seems most people advise not to use it. I used to kill every app after I was done with it but after reading up on it over at Android Forums I don't any more.

I would suggest Handcent SMS for messaging, works great!

Other good ones:

Air Control
C:Geo
FxCamera
Nesoid Lite
Astro File manager

I recommend to use the widget instead, when your phone starts getting slower just click it

google sky maps - point it at the sky to help determine what contellation you are looking at
sit or sqat - helps you determine where the closest public restroom is and if it's clean
trap - very addictive game....
wifi analyzer - good tool for identifying wireless networks within a given area
