Good news for gun owners...

Obama: Don't stock up on guns :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: 44: Barack Obama

Obama: Gun owners do not need to stock up

BY ABDON M. PALLASCH Political Reporter
As gun sales shoot up around the country, President-elect Barack Obama said Sunday that gun-owning Americans do not need to rush out and stock up before he is sworn in next month.

"I believe in common-sense gun safety laws, and I believe in the second amendment," Obama said at a news conference. "Lawful gun owners have nothing to fear. I said that throughout the campaign. I haven't indicated anything different during the transition. I think people can take me at my word."

But National Rifle Association spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said it's not Obama's words — but his legislative track record — that has gun-buyers flocking to the stores.

"Prior to his campaign for president, his record as a state legislator and as a U.S. Senator shows he voted for the most stringent forms of gun control, the most Draconian legislation, gun bans, ammunition bans and even an increase in federal excise taxes up to 500 percent for every gun and firearm sold," Arulanandam said.

Obama answered "yes" in 1996 to a questionnaire from an Illinois group on whether he supported a handgun ban. But he later said a staffer filled out that answer and he did not support a ban.

Nationally, background checks for gun purchases jumped nearly 49 percent during the week Obama was elected, compared with the same time period last year, according to the FBI's National Instant Background Check System.

Anecdotally, gun dealers around the country have reported spikes in sales. The Illinois State Rifle Association Reports gun sales for November were 38 percent higher than last year.

"We don't dispute [the gun sales hike] because the numbers from the federal system certainly confirm that there is increased activity out there. We just think it's a bit stupid," said Peter Hamm, spokesman for the Brady Campaign against Gun Violence.

"Anyone who thinks they need to rush out and buy a firearm clearly has not been paying attention to how quickly we make progress on this issue. We don't think these are first-time buyers. We think they are people who already have more than enough guns at their homes to protect themselves and are buying more."
Now everybody stop all the panic buying so the prices go back to normal.

Someone needs to manufacture robotic arms that would allow the user to fire more than two weapons at the same time. THAT would be a hot item.

I saw that this morning Skeeter, you beat me to posting it

Maybe it's just me, but I don't read "Don't worry, the Second Amendment is safe with me," I read "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE STOP BUYING THOSE EEEVVVVVVVVIIIL BLACK (Semi-Auto NOT ASSAULT WEAPONS) RIFLES. I don't want to have to find and confiscate so many fricken guns!!!!!"

This part bothered me:"I believe in common-sense gun safety laws(WTF IS A COMMON SENSE GUN LAW? I DONT REMEMBER THAT IN THE CONSTITUTION.. only THE RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED), and I believe in the second amendment...I think people can take me at my word"

This part REALLY bothered me:
We think they are people who already have more than enough guns at their homes to protect themselves and are buying more."

So how many is too many? What does the constitution REALLY mean Mr. Brady? Is there something in there that says I can only have two, and I mis-read it? What about the people who hunt, shoot long range competitions, shoot IDPA, and want something to protect their home? Are they SOL?

Something tells me I need to just not watch TV, and hide my computer for the next 4 years, or I am going to end up with an anxiety attack..

It would be very easy to construct something to facilitate that, I don't see the need for such a device so I don't understand why you would think it would sell...

"Common Sense" gun laws to liberals means everyone can own one single bb gun, but it must be registered and there must be nobody under the age of 21 living in the home. Also, the person w/ the BB gun must not live within 5 miles of any school or government building. That's 'common sense'.

OK, gotta go... I'm on my way out to buy an AR while I can.

It worked for Ted Kaszinsky. He hung out in the woods for a couple of years.

That is the part that really bothered me as well.
What he said right there is the reason people are flocking out to buy guns, is the idea that the government has a right to tell me how many guns is too many, like you, i didn't see that anywhere in the second amendment, it must be hidden in there right next to the stipulation for the comon sense gun laws...

No, we need to watch this administration like a hawk and afford him just as much benefit of the doubt as the dems gave Bush.

On a side note, Skeeter (or anyone), if you had the choice, would you go with the original XD in 9mm or the new XDm? They both fit my hand very well, and I like the trigger on the factory XD, so the upgraded trigger doesn't make much difference to me. I was leaning towards the original for cost and proven reliability, but I figured I would see what you think. I have heard rumors of the frame developing small cracks around the backstrap roll pin hole in the new XDm's anyway.

The XD's are nice and ergonomic, My brother has an Original 9mm, I am actually considering an XDm because of the Mag Capacity as well as I am in the need of a 9mm after selling all of mine.

I carry a Glock 32 in .357 SIG now that I actually chose over an XD after shooting both.
