got internet robbed....

so i go to check my bank account last night, and i was 110bux in the hole..... so i noticed that someone had hacked into my itunes account and bought over 300$ in world of warcraft honor points and a glee soundtrack song. i went to my local police station and filed a police report per the bank. i had to fill out all types of affidavits. i spoke with the manager at the bank who told me to let everyone know that this is going to be a big problem for lots of people, he said he has personally dealt with 6people so far this month that had the same problem as me. i just thought i'd let you guys know so you can keep an eye on your bank account. i dont want any of you to be as mad as i am right now, i had to cancel my cards its just a big mess.

When it comes to WoW, thinking isn't involved.

We have had this happen with two of our cards, one that is through USAA and one that is through SunTrust. The really ironic part is that both DH and I are really, really careful with our information, we even shred anything that has personal information on it (like bank statements, bills, etc.) so I'll be damned if I know how they got it.

When it happened with USAA, they actually called us to make sure that was a charge we put on the card. USAA is *really* good about that. If your card is used from a completely different location all of a sudden (say you're in NY and suddenly the card is used in Germany), or a charge shows up that doesn't really fit into your normal spending pattern (like if you suddenly buy $300 worth of porn), they call you and let you know something is going on. They're also super-fast about blocking and reversing those transactions.

With SunTrust it was a bit more of a hassle and we had to cancel the two cards we had for the account (one for each of us) but they were very quick in sending us new cards and refunding the money.

We did not have to go to police and make a statement for either one, though.

Thank you for the heads up. I'm not an iTunes subscriber but have come dangerously close to subscribing.

I had to deal with ID theft a few years ago. The morons that did it had gotten several credit cards from Best Buy, Circuit City, and a few different banks and made over 40K in debt on my name. I made police reports, filed a report with the Federal Trade Commission, all three credit unions and still had new charges showing up. They had ALL of my info. From date of birth to my mothers maiden name. Most of the creditors let the debt go, but a couple smaller companies wanted to pursue me for the charges. Over two years later I was still dealing with issues from this. Good luck and do everything you can to cover all your bases.

Sorry it happened to you, but this is lesson number 1 as to why you should never link anything to your bank account. If it links to a CC, and the charges are fraudulent, you'll still be able to pay the rent.

I feel for you man. I've been in the situation before. My wife actually fell for the 'paypal account needs to be updates' scam a few years back.

That sucks man, you shouldn't have a problem having those charged reversed, but that does take some time and I can tell you from working at a credit union that its not the banks fault. It's a whole complicated pain in the ass system they have to go through. The affidavit is simply our proof of saying you testified that this isn't yours and if it is yours, then your committing fraud. You'll have people who will refute store charges that they made w/ big purchases like TVs or computers and then plainly see that the store has them on camera purchasing the product.

On my old car forum NewCougar I was defrauded by a guy down in Florida for a bumper for $200. We ended up banding together tracking all of this duded information (SSN, address, property) I called his parents, his sister, etc. etc. We had the police involved, I made a whole website dedicated to him.

Warning: Fjmckeever

That's more then likely through VISA or whoever their card carrier is rather then USSA itself. They're a great bank no doubt, but my credit union does the same thing and sometimes it can be a real pain in the ass when members go abroad and don't tell us.

indeed, check your accounts all the time folks. The best way to protect yourself is to keep up to date on it and fight anything right away.

On another note, be warned with your thumb drives. I found one in a parking lot about a week ago and thought "cool 2gig" I opened it up and it had some music, some photos, AND TWO YEARS OF TAX RETURNS SAVED AS PDF's!. Full name, address, phone number and SS# of the person who lost the drive. Yup, I'd of had their entire identity at my finger tips.

Fortunately, Im an honest person and opened it looking for contact info. Turns out, it was my wifes, cousins, girlfriend so we knew her and called her to come get her drive that I picked up and re-bent back into shape after it had been run over.

Hopefully she got a scare and keeps her docs in a safer place. If you go digital on all that stuff, that is cool as hell. But keep your drive in a safe place. Don't use your music traveling drive for your tax returns DOH!

Someone got my daughters account with itunes. Took $500.00. She found out the day it happened and within two days our bank gave her her money back. Someone got my account for a little over $1000.00 to Bed, Bath & Beyond. Luckily I got my money back in three days. Hate my bank in some ways, but at least they got our money back and charged no fees. Technology these days, it's not IF they will get you, it's WHEN.

very simple way of avoiding this. first get into the mind of these hackers, they are going to go after the computer systems that are the most common. simply put don't use a common system. try Linux

im gonna find out who took my money for wicked gay items, im going to drive to his/her house and im going to punch them square in the face. if the cops found out who it was and said, "sorry sam we could only recover half of your money..... but we'll let you punch him/her in the face once". i would crap my pants and then punch thier face in. thats how justice should be dolled out.
