Grey, our new old kitty cat...

Ok, Grey isn't actually ours. He's a stray cat who's lived in the area for a long time. We called him Groucho for a while because he appears to have big bushy eyebrows. The maintenance guy, George, told us his name is Grey and he's been here for about 9 years.

A few weeks ago we decided we needed to put some food out because another local kitten was preggers and she looked way too thin. We call her Sugar. Well Grey has started to come here regularly to eat. He even lays on our doormat and bathes. He's a tuxedo cat just like Benny only less white on his little chest.

But here's the kicker. Grey was in a horrible accident recently. He disappeared for a while, and I thought, you know what I thought. He's a stray and we all know what happens to outside cats. So Grey shows up again with a wound wrapping almost all the way around his neck, over his shoulder and around his stomach. His face is now lopsided and he's got large patches of missing fur. He was covered in blood for a while but has since cleaned himself off. He looked mangled to say the least but he moves just fine, running when anyone gets too close. We're not sure what happened to him.

Grey comes here everyday a couple times for a meal. Benny cries at the door when he's eating and we peer out the window secretly at him. I bought a set of plastic low wide bowls because he has trouble digging into deep bowls. We keep them filled with hard food and water, and once a week he gets a can of wet food.

So we have adopted Grey... and he's a pig!!

Someday, I hope we can catch him and take him to the vet. I'd love to get Grey checked out and maybe give him a real home or at the least, find him a home.

oh poor kitty, he sounds as though someone is caring for him other than you if he had a bandage, but sounds like it may be children too.
What a nice story

Oh no, there wasn't a bandage, the wound wrapped around him. He looks almost like he was either hit by a car or he got caught in an old fan belt. He should be here in a few for his evening meal. I'll see his feet run by the porch as he heads to the door where the food is.

Good for you taking care of the cat. Need more ppl who care about animals. All animals

I'm not a cat person myself but have feed and kept stray cats that wonder onto the farm. Plus they helped keep the mice out of the barns.

I think I'd have to get a live trap. He's very mistrusting. Only George can get sort of close to him. At the very least, he's healing up really nice with his full belly. We had said we wouldn't fill the bowl all the time, but when Grey showed back up so hurt, we had to. I fill it twice a day now with Kit and Kaboodles, Benny's favorite, and Sea Captain's Choice once a week.

Well I didn't treat stray cats as good as you. They just got whatever dog food I had for the dogs at the time.

Your treating him like a king with that fancy kitty food.

I think nutrition is the key to getting him to heal up, plus it's what I have on hand. I can't bear the thought of him out there so hurt and being hungry on top of it. He's a survivor. I can't help but help him in some way.

You mite try a "coon" trap to catch him. You can get them at most farm/tractor supply type stores.

Safe and will not harm the kitty.

That's the kind of trap that we used to put out to catch all the strays in my neighborhood on Key Largo. My girlfriend (at the time) and I were members of a non-profit organization called Friends of Felines that would take as many strays as we could catch to a weekly spay/neuter clinic on the island just south of Key Largo. We spayed and neutered over 30 cats, just she and I. We would take the tamer, more presentable kitties up to a no-kill shelter in Fort Lauderdale, with a check to cover a month of each kittie's food/shelter. After that first month, they relied on donations to feed the animals.....we also donated each month.

The less than presentable kitties got released back into the neighborhood with PLENTY of food on our doorstep to keep them strong and healthy. Our American neighbors even donated a bag of cat food a week to us so we could keep them all fed. The Cuban neighbors weren't so nice to the pack of kitties, so they had some bad luck with one of their boats, and both of their JetSkis. Don't mess with my kitties. Bad things happen.

I think it's admirable that you're adopting Grey, Tiny. There are alot of shallow people out there that just don't care.

It's always been a dream of mine to buy enough land so that I could adopt every stray dog, cat, whatever, and give them a home.

Sometimes they escape as kittens with a flea collar on and as thet grown it cuts into/grows into the skin. We have found one like that before.

Building the trust to the point you can handle them is the trick. Irrigation with Hydrogen Peroxide will help if you can do it.

We nursed a calico back after she attacked a raccoon. Just got a torby back on its feet that had a hole the size of a tomato in its back leg.

Good luck.

You can see how the left side of his face looks a little squished. It's not the camera or the angle, his little face is lopsided, poor baby.

He's getting more comfortable at the door when we're at the window. He doesn't just stare frozen. He looks and goes back to eating. Progress

They left without telling the complex, they just left the keys on the counter and left the whole apartment open. I went over and told the manager because it was pouring rain. The woman at the desk asked me if we'd heard them up there, I said no, and she got right on the radio and had the maintenance guy come over and change out the locks. They're GONE!!!

Oh man, you should have seen the crap they threw off the balcony. Broken clothes hangers, empty shampoo bottles, dryer sheets... They really pissed me off!

But Grey.... He's a good boy. Although, he's a bit over protective of his food bowl. He shredded another cat the other night. There were fur chunks everywhere.

Happy update on Grey. Tonight we got home and Grey was eating at our door. Usually he runs like his tail is on fire but this time he didn't. He slinked along, but when he got around the corner, just off the walkway to our door, he stopped. Cain crouched down and talked to him and he actually turned around and seemed to relax for a second. Even the expression on his little face changed. He sat down and waited. We walked by slow, still talking to him and he hung back but followed us around the corner and went back to eating as soon as we were inside.

There's now also a bowl of food on the porch and a blanket in a box. We put a chair next to the wall and if he can jump, he's got a place to get out of the weather where he can be warm and safe.

I keep watching, but I think he's already made his last trip here for the evening. I hope he comes back tonight and that he can get up on the ledge to get in.

Maybe talk to your local vet about him and ask if there is a safe sedative you can place in his food.

Kitty goes to sleep, you pick him up and get him to the vet???
