Gun owners - what ammo?

didn't want to hijack the other thread so here goes...

i popped my m&p 9mm's cherry this weekend by going to my local gun range with a friend. we used 200 rounds of remington umc fmj and at the price i paid per box the evening cost me $56 for ammo at that price i'm not gonna be able to afford to go to the range as much as i'd like.

i've been looking at wolf ammo as a cheaper alternative but i've read conflicting reports on it so i thought i'd ask everyone's opinion here. who's used it? the good? the bad? the ugly?

Buy a small box and try it out. Some guns eat cheap ammo and like it, while other gag on it!

Wolf is fine, it won't hurt anything but it's a bit dirty.
We've used thousands of rounds of wolf in our AK's and some in our pistols.

I don't like wolf ammo, it has a thick, sticky, gooey coating that I won't put through any of my guns. My life depends on my weapons just won't put that cheap shit in it! Most new good guns cost from around $300-up so take care of your toys. The umc is a good plinking ammo!

i use this cheap ammo called cci blazer brass in my 9mm ruger the stuff is fairly accurate and is only 6.00 dollars a box of 50. i like this stuff over the wolf which i have also shot and this is brass casings where the wolf is steel casings. i just think of the brass being less wearing on gun parts

CCI Blazer also has an aluminum case that will swell more than the brass and hang in the chamber and jam! Always buy brass!

The steel in the wolf cases is very soft, mild steel, there's no evedence of abnormal wear from using it.
The lacquer coating generally generally prevents steel on steel contact anyway. I've got some steel .45ACP cases I've been reloading just to see if it could be done and after several loadings, the lacquer is still in good shape.

crj101, do you reload?
We bought a box of UMC yellow box 9MM when we picked up Amy's carry piece, that crap was so dirty it made wolf look good, her gun jammed on every mag. We haven't tried any since then, have they cleaned it up?

It's tough to have a job where you get free ammo.

I'll try to make it through, though.

I like Fiocchi ammo. That and reloads are all I use in my .45. Turner's puts it on sale a lot, so I'll usually buy a few boxes. Nice quality brass, I'll reload them as many as 5 times before tossing it.

The range I go to down in Oceanside does not allow wolf ammo to be used there. Years ago they had a problem with injuries associated with wolf ammo. I'm sure the quality has improved, but it is still banned at that range.

I've shot CCI blazer with the aluminum case in my .40 and have never had a problem with jamming. Has anyone experienced this? Just wondering...

CCI blazer and Fionnchi or w/e are what the range sells for their rental guns. Seem to work ok.

I usually go to wally world and get winchester white box for target practice. Sometimes you can get the 100 round value pack, that usually sells for the same price, or LESS than the 50

For nightstand duty (no CCL in MD) I use Speers, but am anxiously awaiting the new Winchester "T" series to come to market. I got the new "Handguns" magazine, and the picture of the expanded round pulled from ballistics gel and pig is VERY VERY VERY impressive

All casings expand to fill the chamber when fired whether they're made of brass, steel or aluminum, that's why they have to be resized when reloading.
I've never had nor heard of a jamming problem with aluminum cases but I haven't fired much of it since it's no good for reloading.

I usually buy Winchester but the cost went up so much I'm not gonna be able to buy nearly as much! I'm going to the store to look at getting reloading supplies tomorrow. It's getting crazy!

No, blame the Chinese. They are buying lead like it's going out of style. And steel is going up again! After the Sig Sauer P229 Elite Stainless and something for my wife, I'm not buying anymore guns.

Me either. Maybe a used 12 gauge, possibly even a 410 for home defense, but thats it, and not anytime soon.

I got my 380 i can pocket carry, i got my new PX4 .40 for high round count and punch, my .22 rifle, my 30-30 hunting lever, my SKS for fun, I cant afford anymore. My uncles and cousins have plenty of toys laying around the farm I can borrow, and will inherit one day. cost of living is sky high, only going to get higher if dems get in office, and the job market is a joke right now (atleast in the auto field)

I must admit, there are two long guns I will get as well. A Mossberg 590 12ga and a Remington 700 in .308

So I'll be done after those.
