Had a good scare last night....

I'm up in the Pocono Mts of Pa on vacation with my family. We're spending the week at our vacation home. Yesterday my wife and I took the kids to a huge outdoor water park. It was hot and humid and by the time we got home we we're all wiped out. We let the kids unwind a little by chilling out and watching a little TV. They both fell asleep and I carried them to their beds.

About 10:00 PM I could barely keep my eyes open so I got up and let the dog out to do her business for the night. Almost immediately she starts carrying on. I figured she had seen some deer as they are all over our development. The dog knows by now that she can't catch the deer so she doesn't even bother anymore but she was really carrying on and it was after 10:00.

We have a motion sensor spotlight that shines out the front of the house and I couldn't see her but I could hear her so I grabbed a flashlight and walked out to bring her in. I got around the back of my house and came face to face with a huge black bear. I'm telling you I was less than 10 feet away. He looked at me and I looked at him for a few seconds. All the while the dog is running circles around the bear barking.

I backed slowly away all the while watching him and jumped back inside the house. HA HA I love the dog but I figured she's on her own.

I've been coming up to the Pocono's for many year and I've seen lots of bears just never that close. He had to be a good 400lbs and at that close range he sure looked big.

But dont tell anyone else about it.
They'll feel the need to kill it.....for your safety.

Its nice to hear that there is still some nature left out there. Around here...its all turning into city sprawl. sad.

The dog is fine, about 5-10 minutes later she came back to the house in one piece. I told my wife but not the kids. My kids aren't scaredy cats but they might be a little frightened knowing that a bear that big was so close to the house.

We've had bears in our development before and they've never bothered anyone. I've seen them lots of times just never THAT close.

From what I've been told by our local national park officials, bear are more aggressive this year than they have been in the last 60 years. Something about no acorns?

We were hiking Cade's Cove with my wife, 3 kids(3,2,4 mos) and hiking a high traffic trail. We were about 60 yds from a cabin were a ranger was stationed as I saw something to my right about 30 yds. I froze and watched cautiously and two VERY large bears were moving towards the trails. I had bear spray an air horn and a .357 magnum revolver, but didn't want to use any of them if not life or death necessary. We turned around and headed back towards the trailhead and about 2 minutes later heard the air horn sound from the park ranger.

In all totaled we have saw over 200 bear this season, by far more than any other season in 32 years of being in the area.

Glad you and the dog and family are safe.

last summer i was up scouting for my up coming elk hunting trip. my grandpa and i were walking through the forest.. all of the sudden he freezes and says is that what i think it is. i looked up and there was a good sized cinnamon coated black bear about 30 yards from where we were standing. she was a really pretty bear. and i wish is was hunting season and i had a tag. she would make a good wall mount/rug.

p.s. i might have shat myself. we ran away real quick

Well Super, I have reread your story, studied the empirical evidence, and conducted an investigation. While it would have been extremely beneficial to have a grainy and out of focus video, I determined that based upon the evidence shown that you did in fact encounter a squatch last night. After all, dogs always bark at squatches.

I would suggest putting a bunny in a cage with glow sticks, a monkey, black light powder, some 2x4s, an infrared camera, and a candy bar right outside your door tonight. It's bound to come back.
